Habakkuk 3

  • The Return of Jesus to fight at Armageddon.

The Prophet’s Prayer

Habakkuk 3:1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, on Shigionoth (Exact meaning unknown).
Habakkuk 3:O Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), I have heard Your speech and was afraid;
O Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), revive Your work in the midst (middle) of the years!
In the midst (middle) of the years, make it known;
In wrath, remember mercy.
  • “In Wrath” is the Day of Wrath, the Day of the Lord’s Wrath, the Tribulation.
  • Mercy: h7355 rāḥam
    • The last part of Abraham’s name.
  • Father: ‘āḇ h1 or abba g5
    • The first part of Abraham’s name.
  • Together “Father! Mercy!” = Abraham.
Habakkuk 3:God (‘ĕlôha) came from Teman (at Jesus’ 2nd coming)
  • Teman: South, South wind, a northern district of Edom, poetic often = Edom (A place of demons)
The Holy One (qāḏôš) from Mount Paran (H6290). Selah
  • Paran = “place of caverns”
    The wilderness area bounded on the north by Palestine, on the west by the wilderness of Etham, on the south by the desert of Sinai, and on the east by the valley of Arabah; the exodus was through this area and probably all 18 stops were in this area.
His glory covered the heavens,
And the earth was full of His praise.
Habakkuk 3:His brightness was like the light;
He had rays flashing from His hand,
  • Light is energy and heat. In Physics, Light can be converted to mass, and Mass can be converted to energy (for example, splitting the atom and creating a nuclear bomb). According to Einstein, Mass and Energy are the same.
  • The glory and power of the Almighty is a “Death RAY” for the unrighteous; but the righteous man has the Lord’s protection in His “P-RAY”.
And there His power was hidden.
  • Throughout scripture there are places where God’s secrets are hidden. Scripture calls it God’s “Treasures of Darkness”.
Habakkuk 3:Before Him went pestilence (h1696 dabar – to lead away, put to flight),
And fever (hot coals h7565 rešep̄) followed at His feet.
Habakkuk 3:He stood and measured the earth;
  • God’s tape measure measures the amount of righteousness covering the earth.
He looked and startled the nations.
And the everlasting mountains (sym: nations) were scattered,
The perpetual hills bowed (sym:made a covenant).
His ways are everlasting.
  • The hills (smaller nations) bowed (symbolic and literal: made a covenant).
Habakkuk 3:I saw the tents of Cushan
  • h3572 kûšān “their blackness”
in affliction (tribulation);
The curtains (veils) of the land of Midian trembled.
Habakkuk 3:O Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), were You displeased with the rivers (of people),
Was Your anger against the rivers,
Was Your wrath against the sea,
The LORD is displeased with the sea of people.
  • Satan is a sea monster who lives in the sea of people causing turmoil and stirring up foul waters (called “leviathan”).
That You rode on Your horses (symbolic for “forces”),
Your chariots of salvation?
  • “Chariot”: A mill stone that “rides over” and crushes.
  • “Salvation”: h3444 yᵊšûʿâ
    The name of Jesus in Hebrew: Yeshua.
Habakkuk 3:Your bow was made quite ready;
Oaths were sworn over Your arrows (Lit. tribes or rods, cf. v. 14). Selah
  • A bow is an arc/arch. In Hebrew it means a “covenant/oath/treaty/pact”.
  • The arrows are symbolic of the 12 tribes of Israel; the sons of Jacob.
You divided the earth with rivers.
  • Rivers are the rushing waters of people over time.
Habakkuk 3:10 The mountains (symbolic of nations) saw You and trembled (at Your Power);
The overflowing of the water passed by.
The deep uttered its voice,
And lifted its hands on high.
  • The overflowing water are invasive armies of nations overflowing their boundaries.
Habakkuk 3:11 The sun and moon stood still in their habitation;
At the light of Your arrows they went,
At the shining of Your glittering spear.
Habakkuk 3:12 You marched through the land in indignation (tribulation);
You trampled (Or threshed) the nations in anger.
  • The time of indignation is the prophetic Seven-Year Tribulation.
  • Tribulation and Threshing are synonymous in meanings and interchangeable.
  • When Jesus returns to earth at His 2nd descent, He brings His armies of saints and angels with Him; all leading up to Armageddon.
Habakkuk 3:13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people,
  • Salvation (H3467) yâshaʻ, yaw-shah’; a primitive root; properly, to be open, wide or free, i.e. (by implication) to be safe; causatively, to free or succor:—× at all, avenging, defend, deliver(-er), help, preserve, rescue, be safe, bring (having) salvation, save(-iour), get victory.
For salvation with Your Anointed (Specifically, the Messiah –māšîaḥ-, Jesus).
You struck the head (leader) from the house of the wicked (the Antichrist),
By laying bare from foundation to neck. Selah
  • Jesus reversed the curse of the seed of Satan when He was crucified. He was struck from His Foot to His Head. At His return the tables will be turned on the evil.
  • Above: the burial cloth of Christ and the wounds of His beating.
Habakkuk 3:14 You thrust through with his own arrows
The head of his villages.
They came out like a whirlwind to scatter me;
Their rejoicing was like feasting on the poor in secret.
  • Isaiah 21 The attack on Jerusalem during the tribulation the armies come like a whirlwind.
Habakkuk 3:15 You walked through the sea with Your horses (Symbolic of forces),
Through the heap of great waters.
Habakkuk 3:16 When I heard, my body trembled;
My lips quivered at the voice;
Rottenness entered my bones;
And I trembled in myself,
That I might rest in the day of trouble (the Tribulation)
When he comes up to the people,
He will invade them with His troops.
  • When Jesus comes up to the people, He will invade them with His troops which is Armageddon.

A Hymn of Faith

Habakkuk 3:17 Though the fig tree (symbolic of the nation Israel at the end of days) may not blossom,
Nor fruit be on the vines;
Though the labor of the olive (Symbolic of the Jew) may fail,
And the fields (the world) yield no food;
Though the flock (the Jews) may be cut off from the fold,
And there be no herd in the stalls—
  • The fields are symbolic of the world in scripture.
  • The nation is barren of producing fruit (believers) for God.
Habakkuk 3:18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ),
I will joy in the God (‘ĕlōhîm) of my salvation (yēšaʿ-Name of Jesus in Hebrew).
Habakkuk 3:19 The Lord God (Heb. yᵊhōvâYHWH – Adonai) is my strength;
He will make my feet like deer’s feet,
And He will make me walk on my high hills.
