Acts 2

Coming of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all (Together) with one accord in one place.
Acts 2:And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Acts 2:Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. (Or tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each)
Acts 2:And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Crowd’s Response

Acts 2:And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.
Acts 2:And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.
Acts 2:Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?
Acts 2:And how is it that we hear, each in our own language (dialect) in which we were born?
Acts 2:Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Acts 2:10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
Acts 2:11 Cretans and (Arabians) Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
Acts 2:12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”
Acts 2:13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”
  • To mock/scoff is one of the tactics of Satan.

Peter’s Sermon

Acts 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words.
Acts 2:15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour (9 am) of the day.
  • This indicates the first hour as 7 am and the second hour as 8 am.
Acts 2:16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
Acts 2:17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.
  • Jesus’ first advent to earth would be the “last days” according to Daniel’s timeline of Daniel’s 70 weeks. After 69 weeks, the arrival of the Messiah, the Messiah is “cut off”, and then the Millennium. This would all be according to plan if the Jewish Leaders had accepted Jesus as their Messiah; Jesus still would have had to die, but it would be Jesus’ tribulation week instead of the tribulation “week” for the Jewish nation.

    Jesus’ “Tribulation” week began after the Triumphal Entry and ended just prior to His resurrection for seven “days” (one week). The coming tribulation will be the last seven years of Daniel’s timeline. For each day of Jesus’ affliction and disobedience of the Jews, there will be one year of horrible affliction laid at the nation’s feet, worse than even the holocaust.

    * This is the pattern of God’s judgment – Numbers 14:34 According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land (in disobedience), forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years, and you shall know My rejection. (And they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years-one year for each day)

    Since the leaders DID NOT accept Jesus, the Gentiles were grafted in, and Daniel’s 70th symbolic “week” is put on hold until the Bride of Christ is taken (according to the patterns of the Jewish Feast of the High Holy Days). Then Daniel’s 70th week begins in earnest, the Tribulation in the book of Revelation.

Acts 2:18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
And they shall prophesy.
  • Here scripture is leaving the subject of Jesus’ first advent (works) on earth and jumps ahead to the beginning of the seven year tribulation.
  • Verses below are still prophetically in man’s future.
Acts 2:19 I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
  • Revelation 6:12 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.
  • Isaiah 13:10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not give their light; The sun will be darkened in its going forth, And the moon will not cause its light to shine.
  • Ezekiel 32:7 When I put out your light, I will cover the heavens, and make its stars dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, And the moon shall not give her light.
  • Amos 8:9 “And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord God, “That I will make the sun go down at noon, And I will darken the earth in broad daylight;
  • Micah 3:6 “Therefore you shall have night without vision, And you shall have darkness without divination; The sun shall go down on the prophets, And the day shall be dark for them.
  • Matthew 24:29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
  • Revelation 8:12 Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night.
  • Revelation 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit.
Acts 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord (Joel 2:31).
  • The Day of Christ = The Rapture of the Bride of Christ
  • The Day of the Lord= Jesus’ Return at the end of the Tribulation
Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.’
Acts 2:22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know.
Acts 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;
Acts 2:24 whom God raised up, having loosed (destroyed or abolished) the pains of death (Literally: birth pangs), because it was not possible that He should be held by it.
Acts 2:25 For David says concerning Him:
‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face,
For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
Acts 2:26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad;
Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.
Acts 2:27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One (Jesus) to see corruption (decay).

Acts 2:28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’
Acts 2:29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Acts 2:30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,
Acts 2:31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
Acts 2:32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.
Acts 2:33 Therefore being exalted (by) to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.
Acts 2:34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Acts 2:35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
Acts 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission (forgiveness) of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • ►Story with a moral:
    The Sunday school teacher asked her class, “What does it mean to repent?”
    One little girl said, “It means to be sorry when you do something wrong.”
    But another little girl was waving her arm wildly, so the teacher then called on her.
    “It means,” the second girl grinned, “to be sorry and to do different.”
  • ► To Repent: “Make a YOU Turn.”
  • ►An elderly woman had just returned home from an evening church service when she realized there was an intruder in her home. Seeing that he was in the act of robbing her home of its valuables, the lady yelled “Stop! Acts 2:38!”
    Hearing her, the burglar stopped dead in his tracks and stood motionless. The woman calmly called the police and explained what was going on.
    As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, “Why did you just stand there? All the lady did was yell a Bible verse at you.”
    “Bible verse?” said the burglar, “She said she had an ax and two 38’s!”
Acts 2:39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

A Vital Church Grows

Acts 2:40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse (crooked) generation.”
Acts 2:41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.
Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ (teaching) doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Acts 2:43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.
Acts 2:44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common,
Acts 2:45 and (would sell) sold their possessions and goods, and divided (distributed) them among all, as anyone had need.
Acts 2:46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,
