Isaiah 64

  • Isaiah 64 is a prophecy of the return of Jesus giving visual visions of what will come to take place at the end of the seven year tribulation:

A Prayer for Help

Isaiah 64:1 Oh, that You would rend (tear open) the heavens!
That You would come down!
That the mountains might shake at Your presence—
  • At Jesus’ Return He will descend from the heavens, in the same way and place as He ascended. When He comes, the mountains will shake at His presence:
    • Ezekiel 38:20 so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.’
    • Nahum 1:5 The mountains quake before Him, The hills melt, And the earth heaves at His presence, Yes, the world and all who dwell in it.
    • Revelation 16:18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth.
    • Zechariah 14:4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west,
      Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south.
Isaiah 64:As fire burns brushwood,
  • Like the rushing and crackling of dry wood in a wall of fire, so the blaze of wrath of Jesus when He returns.
As fire causes water to boil (turmoil/tribulation)—
  • Fire is symbolic of judgment and purification.
  • Water is symbolic of the fluid movement of the masses of humanity.
  • When the waters boil it is a sign that Satan is in the waters causing his turmoil.
  • Satan is called a Sea-Monster/Leviathan.
    • Job 41:20 Smoke goes out of his nostrils,
      As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
    • 24 His heart is as hard as stone,
      Even as hard as the lower millstone.
    • 31 He makes the deep boil like a pot;
    • 34 He beholds every high thing;
      He is king over all the children of pride.”
To make Your name (Jesus) known to Your adversaries,
That the nations (Gentiles) may tremble at Your presence!
  • Men believe in the supernatural if it comes from technology, computer programs, science fiction, aliens, and so on. But they refuse to believe in the presence of an almighty God. When Jesus returns they are ALL going to be believers, not necessarily giving up their evil ways but they are about to see the power of the Living God.
  • Jeremiah 10:10
  • But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth will tremble, And the nations will not be able to endure His indignation.

Isaiah 64:When You did awesome things for which we did not look,
You came down,
The mountains shook at Your presence.
Isaiah 64:For since the beginning of the world
Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear,
Nor has the eye seen any God (‘ĕlōhîm) besides You,
Who acts for the one who waits for Him.
  • I Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
Isaiah 64:You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness,
Who remembers You in Your ways.
You are indeed angry, for we have sinned—
In these ways we continue;
And we need to be saved.
  • In Hebrew the word Yeshua means Salvation. It is the same name as Jesus in Greek.
Isaiah 64:But we are all like an unclean thing,
And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags (Lit. a filthy garment)
We all fade as a leaf,
And our iniquities, like the wind,
Have taken us away.
  • I am a blighted leaf separated from the Tree of Life, turning and twisting in the wind until the earth’s grave greet me.
    My veins are a skeleton, the design of life which no longer supports me.
    I, and the grave, meld into one.
Isaiah 64:And there is no one who calls on Your name,
Who stirs himself up to take hold of You;
For You have hidden Your face from us,
And have consumed (Lit. caused us to melt) us because of our iniquities.
Isaiah 64:But now, O Lord (Yᵊhōvâ),
You are our Father;
We are the clay, and You our potter;
And all we are the work of Your hand.
  • BUT NOW! The flipside is…
Isaiah 64:Do not be furious, O Lord (Yᵊhōvâ)
Nor remember iniquity forever;
Indeed, please look—we all are Your people!
Isaiah 64:10 Your holy cities are a wilderness,
Zion is a wilderness,
Jerusalem a desolation.
Isaiah 64:11 Our holy and beautiful temple (Lit. house),
Where our fathers praised You,
Is burned up with fire;
And all our pleasant things are laid waste (have become a ruin).
  • At the writing of the book of Isaiah, this would have been a prophecy. The temple was burnt by the Babylonians in 586/587 BC. The book of Isaiah was written between 739 and 681 BC. (Note: The smaller the BC number for its year, the closer to the present. Therefore; Isaiah was written somewhere from 152 to 94 years prior to Jerusalem being taken by the king of Babylon; Nebuchadnezzar.)
  • This vision will be the same in the middle of the tribulation when the armies of Gog and Magog attack Jerusalem. (The first and second Jewish temple was destroyed on the Jewish day of the 9th of Av. The first time by Nebuchadnezzar in 587 BC, the second time by Titus in 70 AD. Will the third temple of the seven year tribulation also be destroyed on the 9th Av?)

Isaiah 64:12 Will You restrain Yourself because of these things, O Lord (Yᵊhōvâ)?
Will You hold Your peace (keep silent), and afflict us very severely?
  • The seven year tribulation is called the Days of affliction:
  • Matthew 24:21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
  • The patience of God lasts for thousand of years.
