Psalm 59
The Assured Judgment of the Wicked
To the Chief Musician. Set to “Do Not Destroy. (Heb. Al Tashcheth)”
A Michtam of David when Saul sent men, and they watched the house in order to kill him.
Psalm 59:1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God (‘ĕlōhîm);
Defend me (Lit. Set me on high) from those who rise up against me.
Psalm 59:2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity,
And save me from bloodthirsty men.
Psalm 59:3 For look, they lie in wait for my life;
The mighty gather against me,
Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Lord (Yᵊhōvâ).
- John 7:19 Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”
- John 8:37 Abraham’s Seed and Satan’s Seed: “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.
- John 8:40 But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.
Psalm 59:4 They run and prepare themselves through no fault of mine.
- David is innocent of those who want his life.
- As David also Jesus Christ.
- David is a “type” of Jesus.
- David is not yet King.
Awake to help me, and behold!
Psalm 59:5 You therefore, O Lord God of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ‘ĕlōhîm ṣāḇā’), the God (‘ĕlōhîm) of Israel,
Awake to punish all the nations (Gentiles);
Do not be merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah (Let it Be!)
- The time designates for God to punish the Gentiles is called “the Day of Wrath” and “the Day of the Lord’s Wrath”. It is the day when Jesus returns to earth at Armageddon when all the armies of the world are culminating in Megiddo.
Psalm 59:6 At evening they return,
They growl like a dog,
And go all around the city.
- Gentiles were referred to as “dogs” by the Jews. (Mark 7:27-28)
- In the darkness wicked men do wicked deeds. (John 3:19)
- There seem to be hints that Jesus will return during darkness, both figuratively and literally: but not necessarily at night.

That day is a day of wrath, A day of trouble and distress, A day of devastation and desolation, A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness…

Psalm 59:7 Indeed, they belch with their mouth;
Swords are in their lips;
For they say, “Who hears?”
Psalm 59:8 But You, O Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), shall laugh at them;
You shall have all the nations (Gentiles) in derision (chaos).
- Psalm 2:4-6
He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision (chaos).
Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure: - “Yet I have set (installed) My King (The Son of God, Jesus) on My holy hill of Zion (Lit. Upon Zion, the hill of My holiness.)
Psalm 59:9 I will wait for You, O You his Strength (O You My Strength);
For God (‘ĕlōhîm) is my defense (Lit. fortress).
- God is described as a shield, a tower, a defense. A God of mercy and justice.
Psalm 59:10 My God (‘ĕlōhîm) of mercy (My God, His mercy) (O God, my mercy) (O God, Your mercy); shall come to meet me; God (‘ĕlōhîm) shall let me see my desire on my enemies.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Psalm 59:11 Do not slay them, lest my people forget;
Scatter them by Your power,
And bring them down,
O Lord (‘ăḏōnāy) our shield.
Psalm 59:12 For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips,
Let them even be taken in their pride,
And for the cursing and lying which they speak.
Psalm 59:13 Consume them in wrath, consume them,
That they may not be;
And let them know that God (ĕlōhîm) rules in Jacob
To the ends of the earth. Selah
- At the time of David’s writing, he had not yet purchased Jerusalem. At this time, God was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Therefore; David writes God rules in Jacob …To the ends of the earth.
Psalm 59:14 And at evening they return,
They growl like a dog,
And go all around the city.
- Speculation: Could this be a reference to the second battle of Gog and Magog (Gentiles) at the end of the millennium when Satan is released from the bottomless pit to stir up the nations once again.
Psalm 59:15 They wander up and down for food,
And howl (spend the night) if they are not satisfied.
Psalm 59:16 But I will sing of Your power;
Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning;
For You have been my defense
And refuge in the day of my trouble.
Psalm 59:17 To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises;
For God (‘ĕlōhîm) is my defense,
My God (‘ĕlōhîm) of mercy.
