Isaiah 13

  • The Medes (and Persians) conquered Babylon under Cyrus the Great. However; it was the most peaceful takeover in history. During that time it had been reduced to a desert showing half-walls; ultimately used for housing a zoo of wild animals.

  • Isaiah is describing a time of violence beyond this destruction of decay, continuing straight to Armageddon, when Jerusalem is being ruled by a Babylonian Antichrist. (The city of Jerusalem is called a harlot with Babylon written on her forehead.)

Proclamation Against Babylon

Isaiah 13:1 The burden (oracle) against Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.

Armageddon

Isaiah 13:“Lift up a banner on the high mountain,
Raise your voice to them;
Wave your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles.

Isaiah 13:I have commanded My sanctified ones (consecrated or set apart);
I have also called My mighty ones for My anger—
Those who rejoice in My exaltation.”
  • The consecrated ones sealed during the Tribulation; 144,000 young, virgin, Jewish men (12,000 from each tribe).
    • Revelation 14:4
      These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.
Isaiah 13:The noise of a multitude in the mountains,
Like that of many people!
A tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together!
The Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’) musters
The army for battle.
  • Megiddo or Megiddon = “place of crowds” “multitudes” H4023
  • Armageddon = Rev 16:16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon. “the hill or city of Megiddo” “A place of great slaughter” G717
Isaiah 13:They come from a far country,
From the end of heaven—
The Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) and His weapons (Or instruments) of indignation,
To destroy the whole land.
  • The Tribulation is called the Time of the Lord’s Indignation.
Isaiah 13:Wail, for the day of the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) is at hand!
It will come as destruction from the Almighty (šaday).
  • The Day of the Lord is known as “The Day of His Wrath” during the Tribulation culminating in His “Return” to Earth.

Isaiah 13:Therefore all hands will be limp,
Every man’s heart will melt,
Isaiah 13:And they will be afraid.
Pangs (Sharp pains) and sorrows will take hold of them;
They will be in pain as a woman in childbirth;
They will be amazed at one another;
Their faces will be like flames.
  • The Seven Year Tribulation is called the Time of Sorrows, like a woman giving birth.
    • Matthew 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
    • Mark 13:8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows.
Isaiah 13:Behold, the day of the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) comes,
Cruel, with both wrath and fierce anger,
To lay the land desolate;
And He will destroy its sinners from it.
  • Jude 1:14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
Isaiah 13:10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not give their light;
The sun will be darkened in its going forth,
And the moon will not cause its light to shine.
  • Matthew 24:29 The Coming of the Son of Man – “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
  • Revelation 8:12 Fourth Trumpet: The Heavens Struck – Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night.
  • Ezekiel 32:7 When I put out your light, I will cover the heavens, and make its stars dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, And the moon shall not give her light.
Isaiah 13:11 “I will punish the world for its evil,
And the wicked for their iniquity;
I will halt the arrogance of the proud,
And will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible (Or tyrants).
  • Separation of the goats and the sheep.
    • Matthew 25:32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.
Isaiah 13:12 I will make a mortal more rare than fine gold,
A man more (rare) than the golden wedge of Ophir.
Isaiah 13:13 Therefore I will shake the heavens,
And the earth will move out of her place,
In the wrath of the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’)
And in the day of His fierce anger.
  • Isaiah 24:20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, And shall totter like a hut; Its transgression shall be heavy upon it, And it will fall, and not rise again.
  • Psalm 18:7 Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations of the hills also quaked and were shaken, Because He was angry.
  • Isaiah 2:19 They shall go into the holes of the rocks, And into the caves of the earth, From the terror of the Lord And the glory of His majesty, When He arises to shake the earth mightily.
  • Isaiah 24:19 The earth is violently broken, The earth is split open, The earth is shaken exceedingly.
  • Joel 3:16 The Lord also will roar from Zion, And utter His voice from Jerusalem; The heavens and earth will shake; But the Lord will be a shelter for His people, And the strength of the children of Israel.
  • Luke 21:26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
  • Revelation 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.
  • Revelation 16:18 The Earth Utterly Shaken: And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth.
  • Isaiah 13:13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, And the earth will move out of her place,
    In the wrath of the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’) And in the day of His fierce anger.

Isaiah 13:14 It shall be as the hunted gazelle,
And as a sheep that no man takes up (gathers);
Every man will turn to his own people,
And everyone will flee to his own land.
Isaiah 13:15 Everyone who is found will be thrust through,
And everyone who is captured will fall by the sword.
Isaiah 13:16 Their children also will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;
Their houses will be plundered
And their wives ravished.
Isaiah 13:17 “Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them,
Who will not regard (esteem) silver;
And as for gold, they will not delight in it.
  • James 5:3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the Last Days.
  • Ezekiel 7:19 ‘They will throw their silver into the streets, And their gold will be like refuse; Their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them In the day of the wrath of the Lord; They will not satisfy their souls, Nor fill their stomachs, Because it became their stumbling block of iniquity.
Isaiah 13:18 Also their bows will dash the young men to pieces,
And they will have no pity on the fruit of the womb;
Their eye will not spare children.
Isaiah 13:19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms,
The beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride,
Will be as when God (‘ĕlōhîm) overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
Isaiah 13:20 It will never be inhabited,
Nor will it be settled from generation to generation;
Nor will the Arabian pitch tents there,
Nor will the shepherds make their sheepfolds there.
Isaiah 13:21 But wild beasts of the desert will lie there,
And their houses will be full of owls (Or howling creatures);
Ostriches will dwell there,
And wild goats will caper there.
Isaiah 13:22 The hyenas will howl in their citadels,
And jackals in their pleasant palaces.
Her time is near to come,
And her days will not be prolonged.”
