What should I learn from this chapter?
- When events occur in the immediate tense, and also are prophetic of the far future, they are called, by Jewish thought, a “double blessing”.
- Psalm 98 expresses rapturous joy with the knowledge that the Return of the Lord is about to take place with great victory.
- A new song points to Revelation 5, at the beginning of the tribulation when Jesus has the power to open the seals.
- Rev 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
10 And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.”
- Rev 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying:
A Song of Praise to the Lord for His Salvation and Judgment
A Psalm.
Psalm 98:1 Oh, sing to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) a new song!
For He has done marvelous things;
His right hand (The Holy Spirit) and His holy arm (Jesus) have gained Him the victory.
- A New Song! A Pre-Tribulation Rapture indicated by believers are rejoicing prior to Jesus’ return.
Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
- Symbolic: The Head is the Father, the Lord’s Holy Arm is Jesus, the Lord’s Right Hand is the Holy Spirit
Psalm 98:2 The Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) has made known His salvation;
His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations (Gentiles).
- Jesus’ name means “Salvation”. He will be fully revealed to the Jews at His second coming.
Psalm 98:3 He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation (yᵊšûʿâ) of our God (‘ĕlōhîm).
- Every eye shall see Him at His return:
Revelation 1:7 Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. - yᵊšûʿâ is pronounced Yeshua, in Greek it is Jesus.
- Matthew 1:21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus (Salvation), for He will save His people from their sins.”
Psalm 98:4 Shout joyfully to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), all the earth;
Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
Psalm 98:5 Sing to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) with the harp,
With the harp and the sound of a psalm,
Psalm 98:6 With trumpets and the sound of a horn;
Shout joyfully before the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), the King.
- Jesus is the King of the Jews as well as the Old Covenant Husband. He is the Husband of the Bride of Christ. See the metaphors of Jacob’s Two Wives.
Psalm 98:7 Let the sea roar, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell in it;
- The sea is typically symbolic of a “sea of people”.
Psalm 98:8 Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the hills be joyful together
- The hills are typically symbolic of kingdoms also called mountains. The flowing of a river over the Rock has a beautiful sound.
Psalm 98:9 (cont.) before the Lord,
For He is coming to judge the earth.
With righteousness He shall judge the world,
And the peoples with equity (uprightness)
- The Day of the Lord Joel 2:1
Blow the trumpet in Zion,
And sound an alarm in My holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble;
For the day of the Lord is coming,
For it is at hand:
