What is this? God is giving a history of the kings and their wars – but out of the blue, the prophet gives a “sign”, a prophecy of a child being born to a virgin, which seemingly has nothing to do with two kings plotting to kill a third king, as covered by comments in Isaiah 7, {2 of 3}.
This is the prophecy: Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord (‘ăḏōnāy) Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel (Lit. God-With-Us).
So what is the connection? What is the answer to this mystery?
Without research, the reader would never know the story and how God’s “sign” revolves around one unnamed person called “The son of Tabel“.
No one knows the actual name of this “son” is, and yet …
The answer is buried in the story of the split of Solomon’s United Kingdom into two separate kingdoms: Israel and Judah, after the death of King Solomon.
Look at the chart below and notice the white arrows (conquerors) on the left side under the kings of Israel; now notice the absence of white arrows (conquerors) on the right side from King David, through the kings of Judea, and downward, all of which are sons of the lineage of King David.
Israel at this time in history isn’t the Israel we know today. Ten tribes had left the United Kingdom to become Israel, the Northern Kingdom. The Southern Kingdom was called Judea.
Here is where the answer to this mystery verse begins: God promised King David he would never cease to have someone from his lineage to be on the throne, to be fulfilled when Jesus takes the Davidic throne at His second Return.
- “And your (King David’s) house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”II Samuel 7:16 (From Solomon to Jesus)
King David “ Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You, O Lord God, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever.” II Samuel 7:29

Understanding this prophecy in review: Two kings plot to kill the king of Judea (David’s Line), and in his place install their choice, the “son of Tabel‘. God says it isn’t going to happen, then He gives the sign of a child being born of a virgin.
Isaiah 7
Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz
Isaiah 7:1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahaz (#11), the son of Jotham (#10), the son of Uzziah (#9), king of Judah that Rezin king of Syria and Pekah (#37) the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to make war against it, but could not prevail against it (conquer it).
Isaiah 7:2 And it was told to the HOUSE OF DAVID, saying, “Syria’s forces are deployed (Lit. settled upon) in Ephraim.” So his (Ahaz’s) heart and the heart of his people were moved as the trees of the woods are moved with the wind.
Isaiah 7:3 Then the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son, Shear-Jashub (Lit. A Remnant Shall Return), at the end of the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fuller’s Field,
Isaiah 7:4 and say to him: Take heed (Be careful), and be quiet (be calm); do not fear or be fainthearted for these two stubs of smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and the son of Remaliah (Pekah).
Isaiah 7:5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah (Pekah) have plotted evil against you, saying,
Isaiah 7:6 “Let us go up against Judah and trouble it (cause a sickening dread), and let us make a gap in its wall for ourselves, and set a king over them, the son of Tabel (Tabeel/Tabeal)” —
The plot to install the Son of Tabel as king in Judah is a direct challenge to the Davidic covenant, which promised that the throne of David would be established forever (II Samuel 7:16).
Note that on the Kings of Israel and Judah Chart at the bottom of this page, the kings of Israel were conquerors, killing and taking the throne, while the kings of Judah were all descendants of David’s lineage, traced to the coming of the prophetic Messiah, Jesus, SON OF GOD (NOT the son of Tabel).
Isaiah 7:7 thus says the Lord God (‘ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ) (concerning the plot against King Ahaz)
“It shall not stand,
Nor shall it come to pass.
Isaiah 7:8 For the head of Syria is Damascus,
And the head of Damascus is Rezin.
- Syria
Damascus
King Rezin of Aram (part of Syria) - Ephriam
Samaria
King Pekah of Israel
Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be broken (Lit. shattered),
So that it will not be a people.
Isaiah 7:9 The head of Ephraim is Samaria,
And the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son (Pekah).
If you will not believe,
Surely you shall not be established.” ’ ”
The Immanuel Prophecy
Isaiah 7:10 Moreover the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) spoke again to Ahaz, saying,
Isaiah 7:11 “Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God (Yᵊhōvâ ‘ĕlōhîm); ask it either in the depth or in the height above (Lit. make the request deep or make it high above).”
Isaiah 7:12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ)!”
Isaiah 7:13 Then he said, “Hear now, O house of David (Judah)! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God (‘ĕlōhîm) also?
God Gives Ahaz His Sign: The Future Virgin Birth
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord (‘ăḏōnāy) Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel (Lit. God-With-Us).
- A sign higher than the highest of heavens and deeper than the bottomless pit in Revelation.
- Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
- THIS IS THE ONE WHO WILL SIT ON THE THRONE (Not the son of Tabel! An unmentioned name)
Isaiah 7:15 Curds (milk) and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.
Isaiah 7:16 For before the Child (Hezekiah/Jesus) shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by both her kings (Rezin and Pekah during Ahaz’s time).
Isaiah 7:17 The Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) will bring the king of Assyria upon you and your people and your father’s house—days that have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah.”
Isaiah 7:18 And it shall come to pass IN THAT DAY (wording used for the day of Return – symbolized by the Jewish Feast – Yom Kipper)
That the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) will whistle (hiss) for the fly
That is in the farthest part of the rivers of Egypt,
And for the bee (systematic instincts of swarming) that is in the land of Assyria.
Isaiah 7:19 They will come, and all of them will rest
In the desolate valleys and in the clefts of the rocks,
And on all thorns and in all pastures.
Isaiah 7:20 In the same day the Lord (‘ăḏōnāy) will shave with a hired razor,
With those from beyond the River (The Euphrates), with the king of Assyria,
The head and the hair of the legs,
And will also remove the beard.
Isaiah 7:21 It shall be in that day
That a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep;
Isaiah 7:22 So it shall be, from the abundance of milk they give,
That he will eat curds;
For curds and honey, everyone will eat who is left (a remnant) in the land.
Isaiah 7:23 It shall happen in that day,
That wherever there could be a thousand vines
Worth a thousand shekels of silver,
It will be for briers and thorns.
Isaiah 7:24 With arrows and bows men will come there,
Because all the land will become briers and thorns.
Isaiah 7:25 And to any hill which could be dug with the hoe,
You will not go there for fear of briers and thorns;
But it will become a range for oxen
And a place for sheep to roam.
