Symbolism, Patterns, Types, Parables, Shadows – And Hebrew Word Meanings
SYMBOLISM:
Paul uses symbolism to explain concepts in scripture.
- Jewish Feasts are symbolic of prophecies
Hebrews 9:9-10
It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered, which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience — concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.
- Isaac is symbolic of God’s future promise of Grace under a new covenant, while Ishmael is symbolic of the old covenant, the law, which is bondage.
Galatians 4:22-24, 28
For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar—
Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.
PATTERNS (A template)
Acts 7:44 God’s True Tabernacle
“Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as He appointed, instructing Moses to make it according to the pattern (template) that he had seen,
SHADOWS
Hebrews 8:5
Who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”
TYPES
Romans 5:14
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
PARABLES
The Purpose of Parables
Psalm 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old,
Matthew 13:10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?”
Matthew 13:13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
HEBREW WORD MEANINGS: Example
The Hebrew word “AND” is spelled with two Hebrew letters, the Alef and Tav (the first and last letter of the Hebrew alphabet), or in Greek, the “Alpha and Omega”.
“AND” holds everything together: “He is before all things, AND in Him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:17
“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” John 1:3
Genesis 1:1 Literal Hebrew:
In the beginning, created God, the Alef and Tav (Alpha and Omega), the heavens, “AND” (the Alef and Tav) the earth.
ALL THESE ARE INTERCHANGEABLE:
[AND = JESUS = ALPHA AND OMEGA = ALEF AND TAV = CREATOR = SON OF GOD = THE WORD]
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
It is said that a person only needs to read the bible literally. Therefore, it doesn’t need the various techniques of symbolism, types, shadows, original Hebrew word meanings, and patterns.
Such a comment is like saying that a waffle needs to be eaten without maple syrup, butter, fruit, or whipped cream.
Scripture is thick with wonderful and awesome techniques. To deny them is to miss all the secrets in hidden messages. Jesus used these at times to deliberately hide the meanings so that only those who were tender toward the Holy Spirit could understand.
