FOUR VALLEYS IN JERUSALEM:

The valleys of Jerusalem form the Hebrew letter Shin in red dotted line, similar to the English letter “W”.

IN ISRAEL

  1. Kidron Valley

    Runs between the temple mount and Mount Olives. Jesus would have crossed over it many times as He traveled from Bethany to the temple and back. The Garden of Gethsemane was on Mount Olives across the Kidron Valley from the temple.

    A dry river bed. Thousands of Jewish tombstones line the valley, along with hundreds of olive trees. Beside the valley, the Mount of Olives holds the largest Jewish graveyard in the world.

    The Kidron Valley (above) separates the Temple Mount from the Mount of Olives, looking from the location of the massive graveyard (in grey below) along the bottom of Mt. Olives, and looking toward the temple.

    The valley’s western slope has Muslim graves, purportedly to defile the Jewish Messiah when he tries to enter the bricked-up eastern gate. The Kidron Valley is the likely place the Prophet Joel referred to as the “Valley of Jehoshaphat”—where “the Lord judges”—and “the valley of decision” – Joel 3:2, 12, 14.

Jesus could have been pointing to the tombs from Mount Olives when he spoke, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean.” – Matthew 23:27

This may be the “Valley of the Shadow of Death” the shepherd boy, David, wrote about in Psalm 23.
Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me;

At Jesus’ return, His foot will touch the Mount of Olives, and it will split in half.

  • Zechariah 14:4
    And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

According to Zechariah when the Mount of Olives splits, a new large valley is created, leading into the Kidron Valley.

2 – Tyropoeon Valley

The Tyropoeon Valley runs between Hinnom Valley and the Kidron Valley. It runs alongside the temple mount (Mount Mariah) separating it from the city (Mount Zion). A bridge over the Tyropoeon Valley connects the temple on Mount Moriah with Mount Zion.

3 – Hinnom Valley – The Hinnom (Gehenna) Valley is connected to the word “Hell”.  Gehenna was initially where some of the kings of Judah sacrificed their children by fire.

  • Jeremiah 7:31
    And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, nor did it come into My heart.
  • Jeremiah 19:6
    therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “that this place shall no more be called Tophet (a thing spat upon and loathed) or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.
  • Meanings of Hebrew Words
    Tophet = A thing spat upon and loathed
    also called: the Valley of the son of Hell
    also, to be called in the future:
    The Valley of Slaughter

4 – Valley of Jehoshaphat

  • Joel 3:I will also gather all nations, and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
  • The word “jehoshaphat” means ‘God has judged’.
  • Bordeaux Pilgrim, a.d. 333 (tr. Stewart, p. 24), “Also as one goes from Jerusalem to the gate which is to the eastward, in order to ascend the Mount of Olives, is the valley called that of Josaphat.” (See also Geyer, Itin., p. 23)
