The story of Gog and Magog begins in Ezekiel 38.

Gog’s Armies Destroyed

Ezekiel 39:1“And you, son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God (‘ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ): “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of (Some translations: Aquila the chief prince of Meshech) Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal;

Who is Gog? He is the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.
His name is the same as “Agag” who was the king of the Amalakites during the reign of King Saul. The Amalakites continually persecuted the Jews and God told Saul to slay every last Amalakite. Saul, however; spared king Agag. Because of his spared life he was able to produce a genealogical line to the time of Esther in which Haman of the line of Agag, attempted to eradicate each and every Jew.
- Gog is the king of the locusts. Gog is called “The King of the Locusts” in the Greek Septuagint (Amos 7:1 LXX: Septuagint among other translations)
  The locusts are a marching/flying army which destroys and leaves devastation in the same way locusts completely clean and destroy the fruit of the field where nothing is left.
- The names “Gog” and “Agag” are interchangable being one and the same. In the Greek Septuagint the name Gog appears in two other places where it is not mentioned in the Hebrew text. In Numbers 24:7, Gog appears instead of Agag, and in Amos 7:1, the reading is “Gog,” instead of gizei (“the mowings”). These variants indicate the antiquity of the connection between the war of Gog and the advent of the Messiah.

* GOG (AMALAKITE)

Ezekiel 38:17 “Are YOU he (the one-the Antichrist) of whom I have spoken in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied for years in those days that I would bring you (Gog) against them?”

The name “Gog” is interchangeable with “Agag”. Agag was the king of the Amalakites. God told Saul to kill every last Amalakite but Saul spared the king. In a very short time, before Samuel took the sword in his own hands and slew the Amalakite king, Agag was able to have a descendant from which Haman of the book of Esther was derived. It was Haman’s goal to kill every last Jew, the same goal as the coming Antichrist.

After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes who were with him.

Samuel’s words to Agag: “As your sword bereaved women, so will your mother be bereaved among women” Samuel I 15:33.

Gog is a “coalition” of ten (probably part of the ten kings who give their power to the “Antichrist (Gog)” for a period of one hour.) Revelation 17:12

The coalition of ten includes: 1. Gog 2. Magog 3. Rosh (lower USSR) 4. Meshech 5. Tubal 6. Persia (Iran) 7. Ethiopia (Africa) 8. Libya (African) 9. Gomer (Turkey) 10. Togarmah (Turkey). All of these these are Arab countries. They are probably the “clay” in the feet of iron and clay since the red clay alludes to the name Edom.

In the Greek Septuagint of Amos 7:1 Gog is called “the king of the locusts – or caterpillars (a young locust). As the Antichrist he would be a “little horn”, the early years of his rise to power. “Thus the Lord showed me, and behold, a swarm of locusts coming early, and behold, one locust (caterpillar), Gog, the king.”

In the Book of Revelation, an angel called Abaddon is described as the king of an army of locusts; his name is first transcribed in Koine Greek (Revelation 9:11—”whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon,”) as Ἀβαδδών, and then translated Ἀπολλύων, Apollyon.

The meaning of the name of “Gog”: bog, quagmire, stir up, excitement, eagerness. Satan indwells the Antichrist in the middle of the seven years of tribulation.

Satan is called a Leviathan, a sea monster who lives in the sea of people.

In the book of Genesis he causes Esau’s (Edom’s) red stew to boil (stirred up).
* And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom. Genesis 25:30

In Job 41 he causes the waters (of people) to boil (stirred up).
* He makes the deep boil like a pot; He makes the sea like a pot of ointment. Job 41:31

In Ezekiel he stirs up the waters and make them foul.
* “Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say to him: ‘You are like a young lion among the nations, And you are like a monster in the seas, Bursting forth (aggressively) in your rivers, Troubling the waters with your feet, And fouling their rivers.” Ezekiel 32:2

* In Jeremiah he is a boiling pot coming from the north (like Gog)
¹³And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?”
And I said, “I see a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the north.”
¹⁴Then the Lord said to me: “Out of the north calamity shall break forth on all the inhabitants of the land.
¹⁵For behold, I am calling all the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says the Lord; “They shall come and each one set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, (the Antichrist rules from Jerusalem during the seven year tribulation). Jeremiah 1:13-15

* In Job he is the Leviathan who is aroused, excited, stirred up:
“May those curse it who curse the day, Those who are ready to arouse Leviathan.” Job 3:8

The mention of Gog in the book of Numbers says Jesus’ kingdom on earth will be greater than Agag/Gog’s kingdom.

Numbers 24:7
He shall pour water from his buckets, And His seed shall be in many waters. “His king shall be higher (greater) than Agag, And His kingdom (Jesus’ kingdom) shall be exalted.

Haman is a type and shadow of the Antichrist to come. He is the descendant of Agag and prophesied to be the progenitor of the coming “Gog/Agag” Antichrist.

Gog: A Coalition of Ten

Ezekiel 39:2and I will turn you around and lead you on, bringing you up from the far north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel. ³Then I will knock the bow out of your left hand, and cause the arrows to fall out of your right hand.

A “bow” is symbolic of a covenant. This covenant may be the Peace Treaty the Antichrist makes with Israel and then breaks it in the middle of the seven year tribulation. The Antichrist is the rider of the white horse who rides into the tribulation with his “bow”. Revelation 6:1

Ezekiel 39:4You shall fall (Be slain) upon the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you; I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.

Jeremiah 25:³³And at that day the slain of the Lord shall be from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall become refuse on the ground.

Ezekiel 39:5You shall fall (Be slain) on the open field (Lit. the face of the field); for I have spoken,” says the Lord God (‘ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ). ⁶“And I will send fire (what kind? Military, Comets? Fire balls like Sodom and Gomorrah?) on Magog and on those who live in security (securely or confidently) in the coastlands. Then they shall know that I am the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ).

Ezekiel 39:7So I will make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let them profane My holy name anymore. Then the nations shall know that I am the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), the Holy One in Israel.

Ezekiel 39:8Surely it is coming, and it shall be done,” says the Lord God (‘ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ). “This is the day of which I have spoken.

The meaning of the number two (Gog and Magog) in scripture is “it is decided and it is done”. There are also two battles of God and Magog: one just before the tribulation and one at the end of the millennium when Satan is released.
“the day” is the “Day of Wrath” in scripture, also called the “Day of the Lord’s Wrath”, the seven year tribulation.
It is decided and it is done. When God says it will happen it is as good as done because God lives in the present eternally.

Ezekiel 39:9“Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and bucklers, the bows and arrows, the javelins (Lit. hand staffs) and spears; and they will make fires with them for seven years.

Seven years is the same number of years as the seven year tribulation leading to speculation that the Battle of Gog and Magog occurs just before the tribulation leading to the necessity of a peace treaty.

Ezekiel 39:10They will not take wood from the field nor cut down any from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons; and they will plunder those who plundered them, and pillage those who pillaged them,” says the Lord God (‘ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ).

The Burial of Gog

Ezekiel 39:11“It will come to pass in that day that I will give Gog a burial place there in Israel, the valley of those who pass by east of the sea; and it will obstruct travelers, because there they will bury Gog and all his multitude. Therefore they will call it the Valley of Hamon Gog (Lit. The Multitude of Gog).

Ezekiel 39:12For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, in order to cleanse the land.

Ezekiel 39:13Indeed all the people of the land will be burying, and they will gain renown for it on the day that I am glorified,” says the Lord God (ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ).

Ezekiel 39:14“They will set apart men regularly employed, with the help of a search party (Lit. those who pass through), to pass through the land and bury those bodies remaining on the ground, in order to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will make a search.

Ezekiel 39:15The search party will pass through the land; and when anyone sees a man’s bone, he shall set up (build) a marker by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon Gog.

Ezekiel 39:16The name of the city will also be Hamonah (Lit. Multitude). Thus they shall cleanse the land.” ’

A Triumphant Festival

Ezekiel 39:17“And as for you, son of man, thus says the Lord God (ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ), ‘Speak to every sort of bird and to every beast of the field:

The word “field” is symbolic of “the world”.

“Assemble yourselves and come;
Gather together from all sides to My sacrificial meal
Which I am sacrificing for you,
A great sacrificial meal on the mountains of Israel,
That you may eat flesh and drink blood.

Ezekiel 39:18You shall eat the flesh of the mighty,
Drink the blood of the princes of the earth,
Of rams and lambs,
Of goats and bulls,
All of them fatlings of Bashan.

Bashan is known for the place of giants. It appears these animals are types of people from different nations with the strength of a strong military.

Ezekiel 39:19You shall eat fat till you are full,
And drink blood till you are drunk,
At My sacrificial meal
Which I am sacrificing for you.

The vultures and beasts are filling themselves with human flesh. It is unknown whether these birds and beasts are literal or themselves symbolic of other national origins.

Ezekiel 39:20You shall be filled at My table
With horses and riders,
With mighty men
And with all the men of war,” says the Lord God (ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ).

The Great Sacrificial Feast:

Israel Restored to the Land

Ezekiel 39:21“I will set My glory among the nations; all the nations shall see My judgment which I have executed, and My hand which I have laid on them.

Sometime following the war of God and Magog Jesus will return to earth to set up His kingdom. God’s glory is Jesus who will rule in Jerusalem for 1,000 years called the millennium.
- Luke 11:2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Ezekiel 39:22So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God (yᵊhōvâ ‘ĕlōhîm) from that day forward.

Note: The Lord God is ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ; however, the Lord their God is yᵊhōvâ ‘ĕlōhîm.

Ezekiel 39:23The Gentiles shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity; because they were unfaithful to Me, therefore I hid My face from them. I gave them into the hand of their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.

Ezekiel 39:24According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions I have dealt with them, and hidden My face from them.” ’

Ezekiel 39:25“Therefore thus says the Lord God (‘ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ): ‘Now I will bring back the captives of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name—

Ezekiel 39:26after they have borne their shame, and all their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, when they dwelt safely in their own land and no one made them afraid.

Ezekiel 39:27When I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and I am hallowed in them in the sight of many nations,

Ezekiel 39:28then they shall know that I am the Lord their God (Yᵊhōvâ ‘ĕlōhîm), who sent them into captivity among the nations, but also brought them back to their land, and left none of them captive (Lit. there) any longer.

There has been a massive migration to Israel by the Jews from all around the world. A sign of the last days. They will be dispersed again during the seven year tribulation and once again God will bring them back for the last time.

Since 1948 Jews have been returning to Israel. With the exception of the U.S. the nations have been emptied. In 2008 there were about 7.5 million in Israel and 7.5 million in the U.S.

This decision clears the way for the arrival here of some of the remaining 7,200 members of the Bnei Menashe in India, who believe they are the descendants of Manasseh, one of the biblical patriarch Joseph’s two sons and a grandson of Jacob. “With so much economic and political turmoil in the world, it is comforting and reassuring to see that the Divine process of the Ingathering of the Exiles continues,” said Michael Freund, chairman of Shavei Israel, a Jerusalem-based immigrant organization working with the “lost” Jews. “Just as the prophets foretold, God is gathering in the Bnei Menashe, one of the Lost Tribes of Israel, and bringing them home to Zion,” Freund told WND.

God is bringing the Jews back to their homeland from the east, west, north and south: From the east: Many Jews living in MIDDLE EAST countries moved to Israel during the 1900s. After Israel reclaimed independence in 1948, more Jews moved to their ancient homeland after being forced out of various Arab countries in which they had been living for centuries. From the west: During the mid-1900s, hundreds of thousands of Jews living in the West (EUROPE and the US) began moving to Israel to escape various persecutions, most notably, the Holocaust in Nazi GERMANY. From the north: Hundreds of thousands of Jews living in the former SOVIET UNION have moved to Israel since the 1980s.
From the south: During the 1980s and 1990s, Israel struck a deal with Ethiopia’s communist government to allow Jews of Ethiopia to move to Israel. On the weekend of May 25, 1991, for example, 14,500 Ethiopian Jews were airlifted to Israel. Many countries pressured RUSSIA for years before it began to allow its Jews to leave. And ETHIOPA had to be paid a ransom to allow its Jews to leave.

Conclusion, when Jesus returns there will be another, and final, in-gathering of the Jews.

Ezekiel 39:29And I will not hide My face from them anymore; for I shall have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,’ says the Lord God (‘ăḏōnāy yᵊhōvâ).”

Summary:
The timing of the battle of Gog and Magog appears to come in two parts: one just at the beginning of the seven year tribulation and the other at the end of the millennium when Satan is released from the bottomless pit as described in Revelation.
- Rev 20:⁷ Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison ⁸ and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. ⁹ They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. ¹⁰ The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
