Ezekiel 9
The Wicked Are Slain
Ezekiel 9:1 Then He called out in my hearing with a loud voice, saying, “Let those who have charge over the city draw near, each with a deadly (Or destroying) weapon in his hand.”
Ezekiel 9:2 And suddenly six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with his battle-ax (Lit. shattering weapon) in his hand. One man among them was clothed with linen and had a writer’s ink horn at his side (Lit. upon his loins). They went in and stood beside the bronze altar.
- The man clothed in linen with an ink horn is one of six. This man also had a battle-ax like the other five.
- Why six men? Six is the number of fallen man. Six is “worldliness” and “the desires of the flesh”.
- Eph 6:10-12: “the devil’s schemes,” “flesh and blood,” “rulers,” “authorities,” “powers of this dark world” and “spiritual forces of evil.”
- Six is the number of man who is needy and lacking because of his separation from God. One is the number of God because the Godhead is one in perfection, unity, and purpose.
- Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
- When a needy man (who is a six) invites God into his life (Who is One) the man becomes a seven, the number for completion and perfection. God fills the heart of he who is needy. The root meaning of the number seven is a “covenant”. When God makes a covenant with men.
Ezekiel 9:3 Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the temple (Lit. house). And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side;
Ezekiel 9:4 and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”
- The mark is a type of Passover. Instead of doorposts, the mark is on the forehead, and the men with the mark are saved from an angel of death.
- During the tribulation 144,000 young Jewish men will also be marked on their forehead and they will escape death from the intent of the Antichrist to annihilate the Jews. This is the antithesis of the mark of the Antichrist whose number is 666 (the epitome of a fallen man) and the number of destruction and death.
Ezekiel 9:5 To the others He said in my hearing (Lit. ears), “Go after him through the city and kill (Lit. strike); do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity.
Ezekiel 9:6 Utterly slay (Lit. Slay to destruction) old and young men, maidens and little children and women; but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the temple (Lit. house).
- Those who were to serve God but were full of iniquity were the first to be killed because of the disparity of their positions and their actions.
Ezekiel 9:7 Then He said to them, “Defile the temple (Lit. house), and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!” And they went out and killed in the city.
Ezekiel 9:8 So it was, that while they were killing them, I was left alone; and I fell on my face and cried out, and said, “Ah, Lord God! Will You destroy all the remnant of Israel in pouring out Your fury on Jerusalem?”
Ezekiel 9:9 Then He said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of bloodshed, and the city full of perversity; for they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see!’
- The timing of Ezekiel’s vision must be before Israel, the Northern Kingdom, was taken captive by the Assyrians.
