Topic: Meaning of the Number 40 – “Time for a Change”

Below are times in scripture when the winds of God brought about change:

  • The Flood
    • It rained 40 days and 40 nights.
      • Genesis 8:6 So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made.
  • Moses
    • Moses’ life from birth to death:
      • There were 40 years from Moses birth to his exile from Egypt (40 yrs in the Pharaoh’s house).
        • Acts 7:23 “Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel. 24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian.
      • There were 40 years from Moses’ exile from Egypt to the Exodus.
        • Acts 7:30 “And when forty years had passed, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai.
    • There are 40 years of wandering in the wilderness to Moses’ death.
      • Numbers 32:13 So the Lord’s anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone.
    • Moses was on Mt. Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights two separate times.
      • Exodus 24:18 and Exodus 34:1-28
      • Exodus 24:18 So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights
      • Exodus 34:28 So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
    • Moses sent spies, for 40 days, to investigate the land God promised the Israelites as an inheritance.
      • Numbers 13:25 and Numbers 14:34
      • Numbers 13:25 And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.
      • Numbers 14:34 According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years, and you shall know My rejection.
  • The First Three Kings of Israel ruled over the united kingdom for 40 years each:
    • Saul ruled for 40 years
      • Acts 13:21 And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
    • David ruled for 40 years
      • 2 Samuel 5:4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.
    • Solomon ruled for 40 years
      • 1 Kings 11:42 And the period that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.
  • Ezekiel
    • The prophet Ezekiel laid on His right side for 40 days to symbolize Judah’s sins.
      • Ezekiel 4:And when you have completed them, lie again on your right side; then you shall bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days. I have laid on you a day for each year.
  • Elijah went 40 days without food or water at Mount Horeb.
    • I Kings 19:So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.
  • The Judges
    • Othniel judged 40 years
      • Judges 3:11 So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
    • Gideon judged 40 years
      • Judges 8:28 Thus Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted their heads no more. And the country was quiet for forty years in the days of Gideon
    • Samson
      • Judges 13:1 The Birth of Samson – Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.
    • Eli the Priest and Judge
      • 1 Samuel 4:18 Then it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell off the seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
  • Jesus
    • Jesus was tempted by the devil during the 40 days and nights he fasted just before his ministry began.
      • Luke 4:2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
    • Jesus appeared to his disciples and others for 40 days after his resurrection from the dead.
      • Acts 1:3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
  • Isaac and Esau
    • Genesis 25:20 Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian.
    • Genesis 26:34 When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.
  • Burial of Jacob – Joseph’s embalming of Jacob, his father:
    • Genesis 50:Then Joseph fell on his father’s face and wept over him, and kissed him. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. Forty days were required for him, for such are the days required for those who are embalmed;
  • Goliath the Giant
    • I Samuel 17:16 And the Philistine (Goliath) drew near and presented himself forty days, morning and evening.
  • King of Judah
    • 2 Kings 12:1 Jehoash Repairs the Temple – In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem.
  • Egypt Desolate
    • Ezekiel 29:11 Neither foot of man shall pass through it nor foot of beast pass through it, and it shall be uninhabited forty years. 12 I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate; and among the cities that are laid waste, her cities shall be desolate forty years; and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them throughout the countries.” 13 ‘Yet, thus says the Lord God: “At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples among whom they were scattered.
