Psalm 46
What should I learn from this chapter?
Psalm 46 focuses on the final days of mankind, from the tribulation to a new heavens and a new earth.
The prophecies are written poetically in symbolism and metaphors.
The power of God is unfathomable.
God the Refuge of His People and Conqueror of the Nations
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. A Song for Alamoth.
Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help (an abundantly available help) in trouble.
Psalm 46:2 Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
- Isa 65:17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;
And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind. - Psalm 75:3 The earth and all its inhabitants are dissolved; I set up its pillars firmly. Selah
- Hebrews 1:10 “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. 11 They will perish, but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment; 12 Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not fail.”
And though the mountains be carried into the midst (Lit. heart) of the sea;
- Mark 11:23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.
- Mountains are symbolic of kingdoms. It is possible to pray that God will throw a corrupt kingdom into the heart of the sea of people and destroy it.
Psalm 46:3 Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
- The waters in Revelation are struck. This verse is both a literal and symbolic of prophecy in the time of tribulation
- Note: Roaring and troubled waters are from Satan, the Leviathan, causing the sea of people to boil.
- Job 41:31, 34 It (the Sea Monster Leviathan ie Satan) makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.
34 He beholds every high thing;
He is king over all the children of pride.”
Mountains are symbolic of kingdoms.
- Daniel 2:35 And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
- Matthew 17:20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
- Rev 17:9 The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. 10 There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must continue a short time.
- Whenever the nations and people roar, whenever our lives are filled with drama, whenever we stew and fret and our emotional waters are boiling, God makes us lie down in lush pastures beside the still waters.
Psalm 46:4 There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,
The holy place of the tabernacle (dwelling places) of the Most High.
When Jesus sets up His rule in Jerusalem during the 1,000 year millennium:
- Revelation 22:1 The River of Life – And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
- Ezekiel 47:1 The Healing Waters and Trees – Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the altar. 2 He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water, running out on the right side. 3 And when the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. 4 Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist. 5 Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed. 6 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?” Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river. 7 When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many trees on one side and the other. 8 Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. 9 And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. 10 It shall be that fishermen will stand by it from En Gedi to En Eglaim; they will be places for spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish of the Great Sea, exceedingly many. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt. 12 Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.”
Psalm 46:5 God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved (shaken);
God shall help her, just at the break of dawn (Lit. at the turning of the morning).
Jesus will return to earth when the Jews are in dire affliction and in need of rescue. Jesus will be the “break of the dawn” when He returns to earth to save them. The timing is at the end of seven years of severe tribulation. At that time “The ‘Son’ Will Rise Again”.
- Revelation 22:16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”
- 2 Peter 1:19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
Psalm 46:6 The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;
He uttered His voice, the earth melted.
- A summary of the tribulation, Jesus’ return, and a new heaven and a new earth.
Psalm 46:7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
- The Jews are still God’s chosen people.
Psalm 46:8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
Who has made desolations in the earth.
Psalm 46:9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariot in the fire.
- Isaiah 2:4 He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.
- Micah 4:3 He shall judge between many peoples, And rebuke strong nations afar off; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.
Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!
- To be still is live in waters (of people) that are calm.
- We can live in our own still (peaceful) waters even when the waters of other people are roaring (drama).
- Ps 23:1-3
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
