A generation can be visualized as being vertical, horizontal, or both:
- A vertical measurement is the passing of the family culture and history from one descendant to another (up and down).
- A horizontal measurement is a group of people who share common experiences and culture; A nation, a city, a family clan (side to side).
- A generation can also include both: A single ancestor followed by his descendants, one after another in a complete family tree (a circle).
Simply put: a generation is a “completed cycle” defined by surrounding scripture.
Genesis 50:23 Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation.
The word “generation” is not actually used. Hebrew text stops at the word “third”. The word “generation” is assumed. Even in such texts as these it is difficult to ascribe a specific time measurement.
Strong’s definition with it’s root word(s):
h1755 dôr A revolution of time, i.e. an age or generation; also a dwelling.
