Psalm 15

What should I learn from this chapter?

  • The characteristics of a righteous person
  • The territory of Zion
  • Where the temple is located

The Character of Those Who May Dwell with the Lord

A Psalm of David.

Psalm 15:1 Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), who may abide (sojourn) in Your tabernacle (temple)?
Who may dwell in Your holy hill (Zion)?
  • The meaning of Zion sometimes includes Mt. Moriah (where the temple is located) and sometimes Zion is used in contrast to Mt. Moriah.
    • [Side Note: The “Hill of Evil Counsel”, refers to the belief that Zion was the site of the house of Caiaphas, where Judas plotted to betray Jesus. It is located on the south-east of the Valley of Hinnom (Hell), which today is part of the Mount Zion region in Jerusalem.]
  • David Is asking God a question. The rest of the Psalm gives the answer.
Psalm 15:He who walks uprightly,
And works righteousness,
And speaks the truth in his heart;
  • To be upright is to be in a vertical position. Unrighteousness is a horizontal position.
    • A vertical person is like a pillar, like the expression of “a pillar of the community”.
    • A pillar, because of its inscriptions (hieroglyphics or pictographs) is called a witness because it has a story to tell. An upright person tells the truth.
    • An upright person points to heaven whereas a horizontal person points to the world.
    • Upright is life. Horizontal is death.
    • Upright is True North Truth; a compass. No deviation.
Psalm 15:He who does not backbite with his tongue,
Nor does evil to his neighbor,
Nor does he take up (receive) a reproach against his friend;
Psalm 15:In whose eyes a vile person is despised,
But he honors those who fear the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ);
He who swears (takes an oath) to his own hurt and does not change (break his oath);
  • The coming Antichrist breaks his oath (peace treaty) in the middle of the tribulation. The Antichrist will be vile because he does monstrous things.
Psalm 15:He who does not put out his money at usury (charging interest),
Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things shall never be moved.

Country Western Lyrics (copyrighted)

Once I had a good time, but the devil had his way
he was at my throat with the bills he wrote
and I had &!%% to pay.
Now I have thought it over, and what they say is true,
the cost of sin never has an end,
and I can’t afford to pay – Can You?

Come on now…

Once I loved a lady but she took me from the start,
She took my soul without parole and then she sold my heart.
Now I have thought it over, and what they say is true,
The debt of sin never has an end,
and I can’t afford to pay – Can You?

One more time..

Once I wrote a good song, better than the rest, it was a handsome hit, no denying it!
…until the IRS.
Now I have thought it over, and what they say is true,
The debt of sin never has an end,
and I can’t afford to pay – Can You?

(You’re going to pay son…)

My sin is overbearing, my credit card is due, The prosecutor’s drooling, his evidence is true.
Now I have thought it over, and what they say is true,
The debt of sin finally has an end,
Jesus paid for me and he set me free
And he also wants to pay for you.
