Matthew 9:5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?

Matthew 9:6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”

  • From a human perspective, it is more difficult to heal a paralytic, as Jesus’ proclamation would result in condemnation if the individual fails to rise and walk. In contrast, the declaration ‘your sins are forgiven you’ carries no measurable accountability, as there is no means to verify its truth.

Consequently, Jesus substantiates His authority to forgive sins through the healing of a paralytic, thereby affirming that He is God in human form.
