Isaiah 55

An Invitation to Abundant Life

Isaiah 55:“Ho! Everyone who thirsts,
Come to the waters;
  • It’s the 8th day of the feast of Sukkot, or booths as we say in English. On the last or “great” day of the feast, the water libation rite was reaching its climax. The priests circled the altar seven times and then poured the water out with great pomp and ceremony. This was Hoshana Rabbah, the great “HOSHIANA,” or as we say in English “SAVE NOW!”
    Jesus was among the people watching. He stood and cried out “If anyone thirsts let him come to me!”

  • What is this “living water”? It is the pure rain that comes down from heaven, giving life, growth, and abundance including eternal life. It is the Holy Spirit who meets us when we are needy and fills us with refreshment. It is the water that brings in an eternal harvest. It is the Holy Spirit who God gives in abundance.

Come, buy and eat.
Yes, come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without price.
  •  Hebrews 2:3 how shall we escape if we neglect so GREAT a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
Isaiah 55:Why do you spend money (Lit. weigh out silver) for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
  • Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over (overflows).
  • Song of Solomon 2:4 He brought me to the banqueting house, And his banner over me was love.
Isaiah 55:Incline your ear, and come to Me.
Hear, and your soul shall live;
And I will make an everlasting covenant with you—
The sure mercies of David.
  • A New Covenant with the Jewish people at the Millennium.
Isaiah 55:Indeed I have given him as a witness to the people,
A leader and commander for the people.
Isaiah 55:Surely you shall call a nation you do not know,
And nations who do not know you shall run to you,
Because of the Lord your God,
And the Holy One of Israel;
For He has glorified you.”
  • Zechariah 8:23 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.” ’ ”
Isaiah 55:Seek the Lord while He may be found,
Call upon Him while He is near.
  • 2 Corinthians 6:2 For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
  • Acts 24:24-25 And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.”
Isaiah 55:Let the wicked (Lit. man of iniquity) forsake his way,
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the Lord,
And He will have mercy on him;
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon.
Isaiah 55:“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
Isaiah 55:“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.
  • Men cannot begin to comprehend or encapsulate God’s plan for man. It is beyond understanding.
  • Trust God. Have Faith.
Isaiah 55:10 “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven,
And do not return there,
But water the earth,
And make it bring forth and bud,
That it may give seed to the sower
And bread to the eater,
  • Psalm 72:6 He (Jesus) shall comedown like rain upon the grass before mowing, Like showers that water the earth.
  • Joel 2:23 Be glad then, you children of Zion, And rejoice in the Lord your God; For He has given you the former rain (literally “teacher”) faithfully (the “faithful rain” is the Messiah), And He will cause the rain to come down for you— The former rain, And the latter rain in the first.
Isaiah 55:11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void (empty, without fruit),
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
  • Romans 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.
Isaiah 55:12 “For you shall go out with joy,
And be led out with peace;
The mountains and the hills
Shall break forth into singing before you,
And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
  • Trees are symbolic of men.
Isaiah 55:13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree,
And instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree;
And it shall be to the Lord for a name,
For an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”
  • Jesus reverses the curse.
  • Jesus’ crown of thorns removes the thorns from men’s lives.
