Malachi 3
- The prophecy of the Son of God, Jesus, who will appear among men. The prophecy is split between His first coming and His second coming. In 31 AD Jesus was born in the flesh and dwelt among men. He will come again to fulfill all the prophesies concerning His reign on earth when the Jews, specifically, will serve as priests to the gentile nations.
The Coming Messenger
Malachi 3:1 “Behold, I send My messenger (John the Baptist),
And he will prepare the way before Me (Jesus).
And the Lord (‘āḏôn), whom you seek,
Will suddenly come to His temple,
Even the Messenger of the covenant,
In whom you delight.
Behold, He is coming,”
Says the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’).
Malachi 3:2 “But who can endure the day of His coming?
And who can stand when He appears?
- Isaiah 33:14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites: “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”
For He is like a refiner’s fire
And like launderers’ soap.
Malachi 3:3 He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver;
He will purify the sons of Levi (the priests),
And purge (Or refine) them as gold and silver,
That they may offer to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ)
An offering in righteousness.
- How does God refine men? He separates the metal from its impurities.
- The metal is reduced to liquid (humbled) by fire (tribulation) until the dregs (impurities) are removed.
- Once the impurities are removed the molten metal is poured into a mold and used for the purpose for which it was created.
- Refined: Romans 6:5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
- Zechariah 13:9 I will bring the one-third through the fire, Will refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, And I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people’; And each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’ ”
- Proverbs 17:3 The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, But the Lord tests the hearts.
- Refined: Romans 6:5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
Malachi 3:4 “Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem
Will be pleasant (pleasing) to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ),
As in the days of old,
As in former years.
Malachi 3:5 And I will come near you for judgment;
I will be a swift witness
Against sorcerers (drugs and witchcraft),
Against adulterers (sexual cheaters),
Against perjurers (liars),
Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans (greedy corruption),
And against those who turn away an alien (stranger) — (selfish)
Because they do not fear Me,”
Says the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’).
Malachi 3:6 “For I am the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), I do not change;
Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
Malachi 3:7 Yet from the days of your fathers
You have gone away from My ordinances
And have not kept them.
Return to Me, and I will return to you,”
- A literal return, Jesus’ second advent. God returns to the Jews at the end of seven years of tribulation. Scripture says at that time God will once again call them “My people”.
- In the pattern of the High Holy Days.
Says the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’).
“But you said,
‘In what way shall we return?’
- The Jewish Feast of Yom Kippur is called “The Day of Atonement” and “The Day of Return”.
- It is a day when, after seven days of tribulation and affliction one is to afflict his soul, he is prepared to meet God on Yom Kippur, which means literally “The Day of Atonement”.
- Since the Spring Feasts of Passover, First Fruits, the Wave Offering, and Pentecost aligned perfectly with Jesus first advent to earth, what does that mean for the Autumn Feasts?
The Patterns of scripture creates some surprising speculations since:
►The Feast of Trumpets aligns perfectly with scripture concerning the Rapture and Resurrection of believers.
►The Seven Days of Affliction align perfectly with scripture about the Seven Year Tribulation.
►The Day of Atonement aligns perfectly with scripture for Jesus’ second return to earth to set up His kingdom.
Do Not Rob God
Malachi 3:8 “Will a man rob God (‘ĕlōhîm)?
Yet you have robbed Me!
But you say,
‘In what way have we robbed You?’
In tithes and offerings.
Malachi 3:9 You are cursed with a curse,
For you have robbed Me,
Even this whole nation.
- Note: Having an evil eye means being a cheapskate.
- Proverbs 28:22 A man with an evil eye hastens after riches, and does not consider that (the curse of) poverty will come upon him.
- If God blesses you, will you pocket His blessings and walk away from God?
- You will reap what you sow; If you rob God, you will be find yourself destitute.
Malachi 3:10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
And try Me now in this,”
Says the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’),
“If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.
- You will overflow with those things that have the most value: Love, Joy, and Peace. You daughters will not marry a man who beats her. Your sons will not be drug addicts. Joy will overflow during trouble. Peace will flood your soul.
- God is our exceedingly great reward.
- Genesis 15:1 [The Lord’s Covenant With Abram] After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”
- No one can out give God.
Malachi 3:11 “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,
So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground,
Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,”
Says the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’);
Malachi 3:12 “And all nations will call you blessed,
For you will be a delightful land,”
Says the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’).
The People Complain Harshly
Malachi 3:13 “Your words have been harsh (Lit. strong) against Me,”
Says the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ),
“Yet you say,
‘What have we spoken against You?’
Malachi 3:14 You have said,
‘It is useless to serve God (‘ĕlōhîm);
- Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
What profit is it that we have kept His ordinance,
And that we have walked as mourners
Before the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’)?
- They complain “where are our rewards?”
Malachi 3:15 So now we call the proud blessed,
For those who do wickedness are raised up (Lit. built);
They even tempt God (‘ĕlōhîm) and go free.’ ”
- That is, those who do wickedness are those who we respect, look up to, and want to emulate.
- Those who embrace corruption, greed, and give themselves the names of Satan; those who murder, decorate themselves in skulls and snakes; those who rape, steal, and plunder; those who advertise their wickedness and have no guilt. These leave a wake of destruction behind them even as they look ahead for green pastures to once again destroy.
A Book of Remembrance
Malachi 3:16 Then those who feared the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) spoke to one another,
And the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) listened and heard them;
So a book of remembrance was written before Him
For those who fear the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ)
And who meditate (Or esteem) on His name.
- In contrast to those who esteem the wicked and want to emulate them in verse 15.
- God’s book of remembrance reflects the following verse:
- Esther 6:1 The King Honors Mordecai – That night the king could not sleep. So one was commanded to bring the book of the records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.
- God never sleeps and He also never forgets, but is there a better way to tell His saints the value of their faithfulness than by comparing it to Mordecai’s promotions?
- Esther 6:1 The King Honors Mordecai – That night the king could not sleep. So one was commanded to bring the book of the records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.
Malachi 3:17 “They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts (Yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’),
“On the day that I make them My jewels (Lit. special treasure).
- Jewelry (“My jewels”) is symbolic of gold, silver, and gems. These Jewels are rare gems in settings of gold and silver and are priceless to their Father.
Gold cannot corrode. It remains eternally pure. Furthermore; it is valuable, it shines like the brightness of the day, and it can be shaped and molded for God’s purpose, just like faithful men.
And I will spare them
- ”They shall be Mine,”
When God sent the Jews into captivity He told them not even to speak His name; however, there will come a time at the end of the tribulation He will once again call them “my people”. Below are verses to recall those days when God withdrew from His people.
- Amos 5:3 For thus says the Lord God:
“The city that goes out by a thousand
Shall have a hundred left,
And that which goes out by a hundred
Shall have ten left to the house of Israel.” - Amos 6:7,9-11
7 Therefore they shall now go captive as the first of the captives, and those who recline at banquets shall be removed.
9 Then it shall come to pass, that if ten men remain in one house, they shall die. 10 And when a relative of the dead (a loved one or Uncle), with one ( of the survivors of the ten per cent to remain in the land) who will burn the bodies, picks up the bodies (bones) to take them out of the house, he will say to one inside the house, “Are there any more with you?”
Then someone will say, “None.”
And he (the relative) will say, “Hold your tongue! FOR WE DARE NOT MENTION THE NAME OF YAHWEH.” 11a For behold, the Lord gives a command (for YAHWEH commands it!): - Notice in Daniel 9:24, God calls them “thy people” not “my people.” However; when Christ comes to the earth at his second coming, notice God says “my people”.
- Zechariah 2:11 “Many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall become My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you.
- Zechariah 8:8 I will bring them back, And they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. They shall be My people And I will be their God, In truth and righteousness.’
- Amos 5:3 For thus says the Lord God:
As a man spares his own son who serves him.”
- God will spare the righteous remnant from the upcoming seven year tribulation which separates the pure from the impure. Every Jew who remains alive will be a believer in Jesus as their Messiah.
Malachi 3:18 Then you shall again discern
Between the righteous and the wicked,
Between one who serves God (‘ĕlōhîm)
And one who does not serve Him.
- They totally lost their ability to discern good from bad, right from wrong, and north from south. They were “lost”.
