- About the title: The Count of Monte Christo is a book written by Dumas. This chapter is about counting the remnant of Jews who return to the “Mountain of Christ”; Mounte (Kingdom) of Jesus (Christ).
- Ezra chapter 2 counts those who are returning to Jerusalem.
Ezra 2
- The captives didn’t return to Jerusalem just to build it, but to dwell there permanently. However; doing so was going to raise the ire of their neighbors.
- Have you ever asked yourself why Jerusalem and the temple weren’t rebuilt 70 years earlier by the neighboring nations, and why those nations didn’t move into the city, occupy it and turn it into their own possession?
- If history has taught us anything, it has taught us that when the Jews are not in the land God keeps it from being inhabited in order to bring the Jews back into the land He promised them. When the Jews are in the land, the land prospers; and when the Jews are not in the land it turns into a desolation as it did for the years of their dispersion after the temple was again destroyed in 70 AD.
- What a shock for modern day Jews when they realized both temples (this, Solomon’s temple and the coming Herod’s temple) were both destroyed on the exact same day – The tenth of Av on the Jewish Calendar! Solomon’s temple was destroyed in 587 BC while Herod’s temple was destroyed in 70 AD; 687 years later.
- There are no coincidences with God – He reminds us that the past is a reflection of the future. This is why it is as important to study the Old Testament as it is to study the New Testament. Herein are the nuggets of prophecy secrets.
The Captives Who Returned to Jerusalem
Ezra 2:1 Now these are the people of the province who came back from the captivity, of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away to Babylon, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, everyone to his own city.
Ezra 2:2 Those who came with Zerubbabel were Jeshua, Nehemiah, [a]Seraiah, [b]Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, [c]Mispar, Bigvai, [d]Rehum, and Baanah.
- Nehemiah here is not the Nehemiah of Queen Esther and Artaxerxes.

- Why is so much attention given to the documentation of the numbers? Because God promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the sand of the sea. So far, it’s been two steps forward and three steps back. God will have to take drastic steps to bring them to the point they will turn from their evil ways. That day will be the day Jesus returns to set up His kingdom in Jerusalem.
