TYPES OF BAPTISM
- Types of baptism: 1] The baptism unto repentance, 2] The baptism of “death to self” (and born again), and 3] The baptism of the Spirit.
- John’s baptism was a baptism unto repentance; but Jesus was not being baptized unto repentance, He was being baptized unto “Death to Self” and the “baptism of the Spirit”.
- The Baptism of Repentance
- Matthew3:6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance
- Matthew3:6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
- The Baptism of Death to Self
- Luke 22:42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” (Death to Self)
- Matthew 20:23 So He said to them, “You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with (death); but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.” (Death to Self)
- Luke 22:42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” (Death to Self)
- The Baptism of the Spirit:
- Acts 19:4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all. - Jesus also was baptized in the Spirit to fulfill all righteousness.
John 1:32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.
- Acts 19:4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
SYMBOLISM OF BAPTISM
- Being emerged in the water is symbolic of going into the grave, into death.
- Water is symbolic of a “sea of people” of this world.
- When a person dies, he is no longer of this world, he becomes a spiritual being.
- To be brought out of the water is to be resurrected into a new life, to be born again, to give oneself to God, to be set apart to serve others as led by the Spirit of God.
BORN AGAIN
John 3 The New Birth
There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” …
1 Peter 1:23 Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,
SEALED BY THE SPIRIT
Ephesians 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation (He died, was buried, and rose again the third day); in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.
Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
- God’s example of being “sealed” is Noah’s Ark. It was “sealed” with Pitch all around. The literal meaning of pitch is atonement: to be scraped clean.
- Noah’s Ark was separated from the “sea of people”, lifted up on top of the waters.
To be “sealed’ is to be separated.
Job 14:17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And You cover my iniquity. (I am separated, set apart from sin)
Nehemiah 10:28 The Covenant That Was Sealed
Now the rest of the people—the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the Nethinim, and all those who had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, everyone who had knowledge and understanding—
- Nethinim means “given ones” or “those set apart.” The Nethinim were a group of servants tasked with assisting the Levites in service of the temple.
