Zechariah 4
- About the title: Zerubbabel in the book of Zechariah has a straight line to the book of Revelation, so to speak, with prophetic parallel passages.
- The plumbline is also a plumbstone, a plummet stone, a capstone, and a headstone. All of which uses the Hebrew word eḇen h68.
- Zerubbabel’s name means “scattered to Babylon”.
What does Zerubbabel have in common with the Tribulation’s end time and the return of Jesus? The answer is: “BABYLON”
- The Babylonian Antichrist is ruling in Jerusalem (making the city a harlot) for the last 3-12 years of the Tribulation.
- Both times, the Temple is rebuilt, past and future.
Vision of the Lampstand and Olive Trees
Zechariah 4:1 Now the angel (messenger) who talked with me came back and wakened me, as a man who is wakened out of his sleep. 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?”
So I said, “I am looking, and there is a lampstand (H4501 – mᵊnôrâ) of solid gold with a bowl on top of it, and on the stand (menorah) seven lamps with seven pipes to the seven lamps.

The original Menorah, where the bowl on top (not shown) would be full of oil to feed the seven lamps.
Zechariah 4:3 Two olive trees are by it, one at the right of the bowl and the other at its left.” 4 So I answered and spoke to the angel who talked with me, saying, “What are these, my lord?”
Zechariah 4:5 Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?”
And I said, “No, my lord.”
Zechariah 4:6 So he answered and said to me:
“This is the word of the Lord (yᵊhōvâ) to Zerubbabel:
‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit (rûaḥ),’
Says the Lord of hosts (yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’).
- Olive Oil is the representation of the Holy Spirit, used to anoint kings and priests.
Zechariah 4:7a ‘Who are you, O great mountain? (Symbolic: Kingdom)
Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!
- The great kingdom is the kingdom of the future Antichrist and False Prophet who inhabit Jerusalem. That kingdom is “taken down” by Jesus at His Second Return.
- Zechariah 14:10 All the land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be raised up and inhabited in her place from Benjamin’s Gate to the place of the First Gate and the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses. (The phrase “Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!”)
Zechariah 4:7a: And he shall bring forth the capstone
With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” ’ ”
- The capstone is the last stone installed in the construction of arches and buildings, unlike the foundation stone (a cornerstone), which is the first stone, to ensure the building is straight horizontally and vertically. This is reiterated in verse 9.
Zechariah 4:8 Moreover the word of the Lord (yᵊhōvâ) came to me, saying:
Zechariah 4:9 “The hands of Zerubbabel
Have laid the foundation (the beginning) of this temple (Lit. house);
His hands shall also finish it. (and the end)
- Note: The Beginning and the End, the Alpha and Omega, the Alef and the Tav, exemplifies Jesus.
Then you will know
That the Lord of hosts (yᵊhōvâ ṣāḇā’) has sent Me to you.
Zechariah 4:10 For who has despised the day of small things?
For these seven (lamps) rejoice to see
The plumb line (Lit. plummet stone) in the hand of Zerubbabel.
They are the eyes of the Lord (yᵊhōvâ),
Which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”
- Zechariah 3:9 For behold, the stone that I have laid before Joshua (aka Jesus): Upon the stone (plummet stone) are seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave its inscription,’ Says the LORD of hosts, ‘And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
Zechariah 4:11 Then I answered and said to him, “What are these two olive trees—at the right of the lampstand and at its left?” 12 And I further answered and said to him, “What are these two olive branches that drip (Lit. into the hands of) into the receptacles of the two gold pipes from which the golden oil drains?”
Zechariah 4:13 Then he answered me and said, “Do you not know what these are?”
And I said, “No, my lord.”
Zechariah 4:14 So he said, “These are the two anointed ones (Lit. sons of fresh oil), who stand beside the Lord (‘āḏôn) of the whole earth.” (During the Seven-Year Tribulation)
- Revelation 11:3-4 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.” These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth.
