  • Ten Banquets

    There are ten banquets: (1) 1:3-4, (2) 1:5-8, (3) 1:9, (4) 2:18, (5) 3:15, (6) 5:5-6, (7) 7:1-10, (8) 8:17, (9) 9:17, (10) 9:18.
    • The number ten is symbolic of a “whole”.
    • A half means its time to make a choice. At the 5th banquet the decree went out to kill the Jews. Esther has a choice to make that may mean her life.
  • The Vision of Mordecai
    • The Greek Septuagint Begins the book of Esther with a vision of Mordecai:

“Now he was of the captivity which Nabuchodonosor (Nebuchadnezzar) king of Babylon had carried captive from Jerusalem, with Jachonias the king of Judea. And this was his dream:

Behold, voices and a noise, thunders and earthquake, tumult upon the earth. And, behold, two great serpents came forth, both ready for conflict, and there came from them a great voice, and by their voice every nation was prepared for battle, even to fight against the nation of the just. And, behold, a day of darkness and blackness, tribulation and anguish, affection and tumult upon the earth. And all the righteous nation was troubled, fearing their own afflictions; and they prepared to die, and cried to God: and from their cry there came as it were a great river from a little fountain, much water. And light and the sun arose, and the lowly were exalted, and devoured the honorable.”
    • Compare Mordecia’s dream to end time prophecies:
      • Voices, Noise, Thunder and Earthquake:
        • All of which together are in the book of Revelation three times: once for the end of the seven seals, once for the end of the seven trumpets, once for the end of the seven bowls.
        • Haman’s name means “Noise, Tumult” and is being compared to the Antichrist with inference that the coming Antichrist will be Amalekite (as well as Syrian).
          See Esther chapter 3
      • Two great serpents:
        • Serpents are reptiles. Throughout scripture the influence of Satan is demonstrated through reptiles: sea monsters, serpents, dragons, etc.
In the book of Revelation The Antichrist and the False Prophet are described as being puppets of Satan.
      • The nation of the just:
      • A day of darkness and blackness, tribulation and anguish, affection and tumult upon the earth.
        • Haman’s name means “Noise, Tumult” and is being compared to the Antichrist with inference that the coming Antichrist will be Amalekite.
          See Esther chapter 3
        • Daniel 12:1 Prophecy of the End Time – “At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book.
        • Mark 13:19 For in those days there will be tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the creation which God created until this time, nor ever shall be.
        • Day of Darkness:
          • Joel 2:2 A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness, Like the morning clouds spread over the mountains. A people come, great and strong, The like of whom has never been; Nor will there ever be any such after them, Even for many successive generations.
          • Joel 2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
          • Zephaniah 1:15 That day is a day of wrath, A day of trouble and distress, A day of devastation and desolation, A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness,
          • Acts 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
      • A great river from a little fountain, much water:
        • Ezekiel 47:4 Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist.
      • Sun and Light arose:
        • John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
        • Revelation 21:23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.
      • The lowly were exalted:
        • Mark 9:35 And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
      • and devoured the honorable (of this world).”

  • The book of Esther, along with the book of Ruth, are the only two books in the bible named after women. Esther is a Jew and Ruth is a Gentile.
See Jacob’s two wives for insights into this division.
  • The number two means “There is another”, and “It is decided and done”. There is as mysterious other: the gentiles. What God has decided will be done.
  • God is not mentioned in Esther, and yet his presence is shown throughout their lives.
