Psalm 107

Thanksgiving to the Lord for His Great Works of Deliverance

Psalm 107:1 Oh, give thanks to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), for He is good!
For His mercy (Heb. same as goodness), endures forever.
Psalm 107:Let the redeemed of the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) say so,
Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
  • The enemy of the redeemed is physical but their commander is spiritual. It’s none other than that old accuser Satan. Sometimes he lives in the sea of people as the sea monster leviathan who troubles the waters and causes the waters to boil, seethe and stew, and sometimes he lives in the wilderness of people where it is dry, desolate, distressed, and destructive. Wherever He is, he is always working in the background to create misery for men.
  • At King David’s time the redeemed of the Lord are the Jews who have a history of God working on their behalf.
  • The Hebrew word is gā’al, the same word as “kinsman redeemer”. Jesus became man, therefore He is our kinsman and He is our redeemer.
Psalm 107:And gathered out of the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the south.
  • From everywhere.
Psalm 107:They wandered in the wilderness in a desolate way;
They found no city to dwell in.
Psalm 107:Hungry and thirsty,
Their soul fainted in them.
Psalm 107:Then (finally!) they cried out to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) in their trouble,
And He delivered them out of their distresses.
  • The sin nature of men causes men to only cry out to God as the last option when it should be their first option.
  • Try God first.
Psalm 107:And He led them forth by the right way,
That they might go to a city for a dwelling place.
  • Wandering in the wilderness is akin to being homeless without the garbage cans to riffle through. There were millions of them, so many they made the nations tremble in fear at their approach. All they had was their God to sustain them.
Psalm 107:Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
  • Gratefulness is a rare commodity for the Creator of the universe, for the God who holds the very breath of man in His hands, for the Redeemer who gave Himself on the cross for men. How much will it take before man says “Thank you Oh my God!”
    • Luke 17:12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed?
  • Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,This phrase will be repeated throughout this chapter. Count them.
Psalm 107:For He satisfies the longing soul,
And fills the hungry soul with goodness
  • He satisfies the desires of the heart.
Psalm 107:10 Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
Bound in affliction and irons (Prisoners)—
  • The shadow of death is life itself, but no one needs to sit in darkness. See verse 107.
  • Satan’s spiritual prison is for those who took the “wrong” way. See verse 7.
  • What is the “wrong way”? The wrong way is the way that goes “away” from God.
    • Genesis 6:12 So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
    • Jude 1:11 Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.
    • 2 Peter 2:15 They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
    • Romans 3:16 Destruction and misery are in their ways;
  • What is the “right way”? The right way is the way that embraces the way of Jesus.
    • John 14:6a Jesus said to him, “I am the way”
    • Matthew 7:13 The Narrow Way – “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.
    • 1 Corinthians 4:17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.
    • Hebrews 10:20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,
      • It is through the veil we enter the presence of Jesus, the bridegroom. This is the bride’s bridal veil.
      • Like Jacob, when Jesus’ meets his bride, he will weep.
Psalm 107:11 Because they rebelled against the words of God (‘ēl),
And despised (scorned) the counsel (wisdom) of the Most High (ʿelyôn),
Psalm 107:12 Therefore He brought down their heart with labor;
They fell down, and there was none to help.
  • Jesus cried over Jerusalem.
    • Luke 19:41 Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem – Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it.
  • Why does God allow suffering? Because men misuse His blessings…and God is not an “enabler”.
Psalm 107:13 Then they cried out to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
  • To reiterate: Going to God seems to be man’s last option. Only in distress do men seem to seek God.
Psalm 107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And broke their chains in pieces.
  • Men walk through the valley of the shadow of death. The destination is the personage of Death who throws it’s dark and evil presence down the valley.
  • Jesus has the keys to the resurrection so that men can supersede death to live forever; therefore, the grave is not a threat.
    • 1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly (with limited light to our reality), but then face to face (in the presence of full Light illuminating absolute Truth and reality). Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
  • When we see Jesus face to face it will be in a glorified body and only then will we get the full blast of His Glory.
    • Babies squint when they are born. When we get the full blast of Jesus’ light we will also squint at the enormous reality of full Light and real Truth.
    • We will be fully delivered, fully “born again”.
  • Satan, the dark principalities, and sinful men live in the darkness, it is a place where dark men do dark things not knowing they are doing it in the blinding light of God’s eyes.
  • Darkness is not an evil place. It is a place where man cannot see. Darkness is a place where men do evil things but it is also a place where God hides his mysteries.
  • Too much truth is toxic for a sinful man.
  • ONLY God knows the totality of reality. We rely on God to see truth and not live in total darkness but live in the midst of darkness as the Holy Spirit leads us from light to light and truth to truth. God’s truth is unmarred. Truth is not what we want to believe, what our opinions are, not biased news, and not revisionist history. It cannot be bent, twisted, or intimidated except within the eyes of blind men as manipulated by the accuser.
  • The irony is, Truth is hid in the darkness because men do not have the Light of Truth in order to see Truth.
  • God gives His Truth to men as He sees fit. It depends on how men rely on that measure of truth as to whether or not He gives a man even more:
    • Cyrus the Persian knew the Babylonian kingdom which was “unconquerable”.
    • Isaiah 45:1 “Thus says the Lord to His anointed, To Cyrus, whose right hand I have held (strengthened or sustained) —To subdue nations before him and loose the armor of kings, to open before him the double doors, so that the gates will not be shut: ‘I will go before you and make (Tg. I will trample down the walls; Vg. I will humble the great ones of the earth) the crooked places (mountains) straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the Lord, Who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel.
    • A MUST READ: Daniel chapter 5 – Cyrus conquers Babylon when He gets an “idea”.
  • When God brings man “out of darkness” he reveals what is in the darkness by sharing a measure of His “Light!” For His children, it is a treasure hidden in the darkness, an opportunity or an idea that will change their lives.
Psalm 107:15 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
Psalm 107:16 For He has broken the gates of bronze, and cut the bars of iron in two.
  • These are the same words God told Cyrus:
    • Isaiah 45:2 ‘I will go before you And make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze And cut the bars of iron. (See vs 15)
  • When God gives men “Light” He gives them treasures from His darkness that they couldn’t see without Him.
  • When Cyrus conquered Babylon, the city was literally protected by gates of bronze and bars of iron. God took Cyrus “under” the water gate.
  • Today is July 5th and I am working on this chapter. For those who know me know I was diagnosed with Stomach Cancer seven years ago and I celebrate being clear of cancer since the diagnoses June 29, 2015. It was a time of pure joy as I rested totally in the Lord and I did not have one minute of fear, which is a miracle since I have been given to panic attacks over medical issues since as far back as I can remember.

The chemo attacked the enamel of my teeth and the soda took the rest. My entire mouth was capped. Then I got the news that the caps were working to keep the teeth from decaying. They are going to have to pull all my upper teeth and put in a denture. The cost would be about $20K. I don’t have that kind of money and I can’t see myself going toothless. (I don’t have a car and I don’t have a cell phone but God gave me my life!) I cried out to my God who miraculously saved me out of my distress. I sent a resume to ***** on July 2nd, 2022, I received a call for an interview on July 3rd, 2022, I had the interview on July 4th 2022 and I was offered the job on July 4th, 2022. I want to say here and now, publicly, Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, I praise you my Lord and my God for All Your Goodness. This company is where my husband works part time. Between the two of us we could have dental insurance that might cover all the pay for my teeth. I get to ride with him to and from his work and I would work with him in the same department doing scheduling so that I don’t have to use my pay to buy a car for transportation. When they called me they had no idea my husband worked there. God does everything better than we can imagine.
Psalm 107:17 Fools, because of their transgression,
And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
Psalm 107:18 Their soul abhorred all manner of food,
And they drew near to the gates of death.

Psalm 107:20 He sent His Word (Jesus) and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions.
  • John 1:14
    The Word Becomes Flesh
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
  • Matthew 4:23-24
    Jesus Heals a Great Multitude
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.
Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.
Psalm 107:21 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

And His wonders in the deep.
Psalm 107:25 For He commands and raises the stormy wind,
Which lifts up the waves of the sea.
  • Wind and Wave Obey Jesus
    • Mark 4:35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
Psalm 107:26 They mount up to the heavens,
They go down again to the depths;
Their soul melts because of trouble.
  • “They” are the repeating waves of the sea who are men.
  • “They” are the waters of mayhem.
  • “They” are waters who are fouled by the presence of the sea monster, Leviathan, Satan.
Psalm 107:27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man,
And are at their wits’ end (Lit. all their wisdom is swallowed up).
Psalm 107:28 Then they cry out to the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) in their trouble,
And He brings them out of their distresses.
Psalm 107:29 He calms the storm,
So that its waves are still.

So He guides them to their desired haven.
  • My desired haven is heaven.

And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
Psalm 107:32 Let them exalt Him also in the assembly of the people,
And praise Him in the company of the elders.
Psalm 107:33 He turns rivers into a wilderness,
And the watersprings into dry ground;
Psalm 107:34 A fruitful land into barrenness (Lit. a salty waste),
For the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
Psalm 107:35 He turns a wilderness into pools of water,
And dry land into watersprings.
Psalm 107:36 There He makes the hungry dwell,
That they may establish a city for a dwelling place,
Psalm 107:37 And sow fields and plant vineyards,
That they may yield a fruitful harvest.

And He does not let their cattle decrease.
Psalm 107:39 When they are diminished and brought low
Through oppression, affliction, and sorrow,
Psalm 107:40 He pours contempt on princes,
And causes them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way;
Psalm 107:41 Yet He sets the poor on high, far from affliction,
And makes their families like a flock.
  • Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Psalm 107:42 The righteous see it and rejoice,
And all iniquity stops its mouth.
Psalm 107:43 Whoever is wise will observe these things,
And THEY will understand the loving kindness of the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ).
