Psalm 61
Assurance of God’s Eternal Protection
To the Chief Musician. On a stringed (Heb. Neginah)
instrument. A Psalm of David.
Psalm 61:1 Hear my cry, O God (‘ĕlōhîm);
Attend to my prayer.
Psalm 61:2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
- See Jesus as the Rock
- Jesus’ kingdom will be “higher than high”. (Higher than king Agag’s kingdom whose name means “high”.) Numbers 24:7
Psalm 61:3 For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.
- From a tower one can see a panoramic view of reality.
Psalm 61:4 I will abide in Your tabernacle (tent) forever;
I will trust in the shelter (Lit: secret hiding place) of Your wings. Selah
- The shelter is a place to conceal something by hiding it in the darkness.
- For those who are spiritually blind – everything is hidden in darkness.
- Only when God heals man of his blindness will he be able to see the secrets God chooses to reveal.
- The root meaning of tabernacle is “clear, shining, a vibrating brightness”
- Those who trust God abide in the vibrating shining of His presence. To those who are spiritually blind it is nothing more than groping amid the darkness.
- Vision is the art of seeing that which is invisible to others. Jesus is the visible manifestation of the invisible God, but the blind can’t see Him.
- Vision is the art of seeing that which is invisible to others. Jesus is the visible manifestation of the invisible God, but the blind can’t see Him.
- The root meaning of “wings” is to be put or thrust in a corner, to be hidden from view.
- Song of Solomon 2:14
“O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, In the secret places of the cliff, Let me see your face, Let me hear your voice; For your voice is sweet, And your face is lovely.”
- Song of Solomon 2:14
Psalm 61:5 For You, O God (‘ĕlōhîm), have heard my vows;
You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name.
Psalm 61:6 You will prolong the king’s life,
His years as many generations.
Psalm 61:7 He shall abide before God (‘ĕlōhîm) forever.
Oh, prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve (Lit. guard or keep) him!
Psalm 61:8 So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may daily perform my vows (that which one promises to God).
- The root meaning for the Hebrew word “vow” is twofold: to promise voluntarily – and to fall like grain from the winnowing fork, like a threshing floor: connected with sowing and scattering.
- The vow and the seven year tribulation are related; they are both related to the word “threshing floor”. King David purchased Jerusalem when it was a threshing floor. “Threshing”, or “thrashing” also means Tribulation. The “City of Peace” is built on a foundation of “tribulation”.
- The threshing floor is a place where the wheat is separated from the chaff – what does that remind us of?
- Luke 3:17
- His winnowing fan (fork) is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor (Literally, Jerusalem), and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”
- The threshing floor is literally Jerusalem during the seven year tribulation, but it also applies to all mankind who ignore God’s Word.
- The threshing floor is literally Jerusalem during the seven year tribulation, but it also applies to all mankind who ignore God’s Word.
- God’s covenant with the Jews is built on promises to protect and prosper if the Jews obey His laws. If they do not obey His laws He promised to scatter them to the fields of the nations, to persecution and and captivity. He will also bring each and every remaining Jew to an awakening knowledge of the identity of their Messiah, during the seven year tribulation before setting up His kingdom on earth…in Jerusalem.
