Genesis 2

What should I learn from this chapter?

• YHWH is Yĕhovah: Strong’s H3068 translated LORD in the English Bible.
• History operates in various kinds of circles (cycles). The end of a circle is the number 7. Sunday is 1 and Saturday is 7 and the circle begins again up the “slinky”.

The History of Creation (Continued from Chapter 1)

Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.

• “That which man builds rots and decays; that which God builds stays and stays.” ~Barbara Grover

Genesis 2:² And on the seventh day God (אֱלֹהִים  ‘Elohiym) ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.

• Elohiym, the noun (they) is plural. The pronoun (Him) is singular. The verb (created) is singular.
  Summary: The Godhead is plural, (The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) but are all “One” sharing the same spiritual DNA.
  • Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
  • The word “one” in this verse means “unity”, not a number.

Genesis 2:³ Then God (Elohiym) blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God (Elohiym) had created and made.

• Note: The first two Hebrew letters of Elohiym (אֱלֹהִים) are (אֱלֹ) El. The first is plural the second is singular, both are used for of “God”.
• Genesis 2:⁴ This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord (יְהֹוָה  Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים  ‘Elohiym) made the earth and the heavens,

Genesis 2:⁵ before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים ‘Elohiym) had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground;

Genesis 2:⁶ but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.

• Notice there is no mention of rain. An orb of ice encapsulated the earth, creating an environment like a terrarium. With the Great World Wide Flood, the ice broke apart and rained down on the earth as well as water spewing up from the caverns in the ground (which had created the mist.)

• Not until Noah landed the ark on dry land did man experience rain or a rainbow.

Genesis 2:⁷ And the Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים Elohiym) formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

• The first thing Adam saw when he opened his eyes was God (not God’s creation). After man sinned he began to focus on the creation of things instead of God.

  • John 20:19-22 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
  • The only people receiving the Holy Spirit were the people in the upper room.
    Thomas missed it.
    It wasn’t until Thomas returned did he receive the Holy Spirit and was able to “see”.
  • John 20:26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
• Thomas was able to “see” who Jesus was; his Lord and his God!
• For those who do not believe that Jesus is God, this statement should suffice.
  • The Breath of Inspiration: 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God (“breathed out by God”) (The Holy Spirit), and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction (training, discipline) in righteousness.

• The moment God breathed His breath into Adam, Adam became “made” in God’s image.

Life in God’s Garden

• At this point, scripture rewinds and retells the story of creation with more detail.

Genesis 2:⁸ The Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים ‘Elohiym) planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.

• To be grammarily correct, it is the Garden “IN” Eden (not the Garden OF Eden).

• Whatever God creates, He also fills. God created man and filled him with His own breath. God created the garden, and filled it with man.

Genesis 2:⁹ And out of the ground the Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים ‘Elohiym) made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Genesis 2:¹⁰ Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.

Genesis 2:¹¹ The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.

Genesis 2:¹² And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. ¹³ The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. ¹⁴ The name of the third river is Hiddekel (Tigris); it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

Genesis 2:¹⁵ Then the Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים ‘Elohiym) took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.

• The “Tree of Life” symbolically, is Jesus. From the “Tree of Life” comes the “Book of Life”.

Genesis 2:¹⁶ And the Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים ‘Elohiym) commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;

• Look! You have a banquet table of selections!

Genesis 2:¹⁷ but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die (be extinquished).”

• Spiritual death is worse then physical death. Man dies both spiritually and physically.

Genesis 2:¹⁸ And the Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים ‘Elohiym) said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable (a help meet) to him.

• A helper is someone to benefit him. A helper is not lower than him but given a different role.

• As flesh of his flesh and bone of his bone, a helper promotes and completes a man and gives him a future (children). In turn the man loves, protects, provides, and covers the woman. He will even lay down his life for her.

• It is said that a woman represents the spirit of a man, and the man represents the temporal body of a man.

• It is a woman who provides a future for a man in his children. Jesus was born of a woman, but Jesus was not born of a man.

Genesis 2:¹⁹ Out of the ground the Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים ‘Elohiym) formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.

• The name “Adam” means “Man”. Adam was made from the red clay of the earth. Man is compared to pottery in scripture.
• Because the clay is red, and Esau was red he was called “Edom”.
• “Adam” comes from the Hebrew word “dam” which means “red wine or red blood”.
• “Adam” was made from the earth. The Hebrew word for earth is “Adamah”.
• From “dam” to “Adam” to “Adamah”.
• The life of Adam is in his dam.
  • Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’

Genesis 2:²⁰ So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

Genesis 2:²¹ And the Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God (אֱלֹהִים Elohiym) caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.

• The first surgery on a man.

Genesis 2:²² Then the rib which the Lord (יְהֹוָה Yĕhovah) God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

The meaning of a rib is a density strong enough to act as a support, like any bone in the body. Most male mammals have a bone in their penis. Dogs do, whales do, raccoons do, but humans do not. One theory suggests God used the bone in Adam’s penis to create the woman. It had an arc, like a rib. The word “tzela” appears about 40 times in the Bible, but nowhere does it mean rib except for the translation in Genesis chapter 2. In ancient times, tzela in anatomy referred to organs protruding outward from the body. One can argue that penises relate better to the giving of life.

• God could have taken the DNA from Adam’s “rib” and changed it to make a woman.

• Adam was created. Eve was made. Jesus was the “Creator” of Himself when He became man.
  
  Jesus had the spiritual DNA of the Godhead without the sin nature of either of his parents. One of the placenta’s main functions is to serve as the interface between the mother’s and fetus’s bloodstreams. Nutrients and oxygen from the mother’s blood pass into the baby’s bloodstream through the placenta. Meanwhile, the baby excretes carbon dioxide and waste products through the umbilical blood vessels. Genesis 2:²³ And Adam said:

“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

• To my adopted daughter:
  Not flesh of my flesh
  Nor bone of my bone
  but still, miraculously, my own.
  Never forget for a single minute,
  You didn’t grow under my heart,
  But in it. ~unknown

Genesis 2:²⁴ Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

• In physics, to become “one flesh” is to become “entangled”.

Genesis 2:²⁵ And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

• Being naked without shame means they were innocent. Having shame is a sign of sin, and sin needs to be covered. Little ones do not know they are naked because they are innocent. Where there are no objections there are no rejections. They are covered by love, until an accuser appears. Criticism begets vulnerability.
