Words in italic type have been added for clarity. They are not found in the original Hebrew or Aramaic.
Matthew 3:1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
Matthew 3:2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
Matthew3:3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.’ ”
Matthew3:4 Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
- Note: John the baptizer dressed like Elijah.
2 Kings 1:8 So they answered him, “A hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”
Matthew3:5 Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him
Matthew3:6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
- Were they confessing their sins to John the baptizer?
Matthew3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

- “A rattlesnake bit one of my sheep in the face about a week ago. Deadliest snake that lives around here. The sheep’s face swelled up and hurt her terribly.
But the old rattlesnake didn’t know the kind of blood that flows through the sheep. Anti-venom is most often made from sheep’s blood. The sheep swelled for about 2 days but the blood of the lamb destroyed the venom of the serpent.
I was worried but the sheep didn’t care. She kept on eating, kept on drinking and kept on climbing because she knew she was alright.
Often the serpents of this life will reach out and bite us. They inject their poison into us but they cannot overcome the Blood of the Lamb of God that washes away the sin of the world and the sting of death. Don’t worry about the serpent or his bite, just make sure that the Lamb’s Blood is flowing through your veins.”
- It took a Passover “Lamb” to create an anti-toxin for the sins of men in order to neutralize the lies of Satan.
Matthew3:8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,
- Story with a moral:
- The Sunday school teacher asked her class, “What does it mean to repent?”
One little girl said, “It means to be sorry when you do something wrong.”
But another little girl was waving her arm wildly, so the teacher then called on her.
“It means,” the second girl grinned, “to be sorry and to do different.”
Matthew3:9 and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
- Luke 19:40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”
Matthew3:10 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
- Trees are symbolic of men. Men who are useless to God, those who work in opposition to His agenda are goof for nothing but to be thrown into the fire. Fire is symbolic of judgment.
Matthew3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals (of authority) I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Matthew3:12 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
- Men are compared to chaff and wheat. Those who are righteous are considered to be wheat. Those who are unrighteous are chaff. To winnow wheat is to throw cut wheat into the air with pitchforks and let the wind blow the chaff away. Chaff is lighter than wheat. Wheat falls to the ground. The chaff is blown away.
- On God’s scales, that which is heavier is of more value.
- God compares His harvest with the reaping of the souls of men. Therefore: resurrections are compared to a harvest. Furthermore; Jewish Feasts are also ties to the harvests. Jesus is the First Fruit. The tombs of the saints which were opened are the Wave Offering. In the future there will be a main harvest and lastly the gleanings. The Jewish Feasts yet to come with resurrections are the Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement aka The Return.
