II Kings 16

Ahaz Reigns in Judah

II Kings 16:1 In the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, Ahaz the son of Jotham, king of Judah, began to reign.
II Kings 16:Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem; and he did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God (Yᵊhōvâ ‘ĕlōhîm), as his father David had done.
II Kings 16:But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel; indeed he made his son pass through the fire (Hezekiah’s brother), according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) had cast out from before the children of Israel.
II Kings 16:And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.
II Kings 16:Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, came up to Jerusalem to make war; and they besieged Ahaz but could not overcome him.
‘āḏônAt that time Rezin king of Aram Damascus (Syria) captured Elath (Lit. Large Terebinth Tree; singular of Eloth) for Syria, and drove the men of Judah from Elath. Then the Edomites (A few ancient mss. translate it as Syrians) went to Elath, and dwell there to this day.
  • The Edomites are descendants of Esau; called Edom (Red, because he was born red all over). As a man, he insulted the God of heaven when he sold his birthright for a bowl of red stew. (Malachi 1:3, Romans 9:13)

Hence; the title: To “Read” and be “Read” (Red).
  • Rezin is king of Syrian capturing Elath. Elath has many meanings all pointing to the prophecies of Jesus but one of special note is “Terebinth tree” which symbolizes the tithe of a tenth when Abraham gave Melchizedek (Hebrews 7), the king and priest of Salem (Jerusalem) a tenth of all he owned (tithe). The Terebinth tree is considered a sacred tree.

The prophet Isaiah was sent to speak to Judah and Israel (God’s vineyard of Isaiah 5) that they will be destroyed and taken captive, even up and until the seven final years of tribulation completing Daniel’s 70th week. Since history repeats itself, these descriptions fit both immediate danger for Israel, a further out danger for Judah, and the ending danger of the modern united kingdom of Israel:

    Isaiah 6:11-13
“Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant, The houses are without a man, The land is utterly desolate, 12 The Lord has removed men far away, And the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land. 13 But yet a tenth will be in it (only a tithe left of immediate danger) And will return (the modern Israel) and be for consuming (The future 7 year Tribulation), As a terebinth tree or as an oak,
Whose stump remains when it is cut down. So the holy seed (the coming millennium when Jesus reigns on earth as the holy Seed and the remnant tenth) shall be its stump.”
  • Elath (symbolizing Jerusalem in the middle of the seven year tribulation) is then filled with Edomite Syrians even as Hebrew Jews are driven out.
  • CONCLUSION:

    * Rezin is a type of Antichrist. His name means to be 1) firm, 2) he makes himself acceptable or pleasing (his tongue is smoother than butter), and 3) Self-Willed.
    * He fills Elath (the place of a Terebinth Tree, a sacred tree and a prophesy of Jesus) with Edomite Syrians while driving out Jewish inhabitants.
    * The Terebinth Tree represents Jerusalem, the King of Jerusalem, and Jesus.
    For more information on the Antichrist, See Topic: I.D. of the Antichrist. See II Kings 16 {5 of 7}
    * Rezin, king of Syria, aligns with Pekah, king of Israel. Pekah’s name means “eyes/ears opened”.
    The prophet, Isaiah warns them:
    Isaiah 6:And He said, “Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’ 10 “Make the heart of this people dull, And their ears heavy, And shut their eyes;
Lest they see with their eyes,
    And hear with their ears,
    And understand with their heart,
    And return and be healed.”
  • Therefore scripture “hints” to prophecies that the background of the coming Antichrist is Edomite (as well as Amalakite, Middle Eastern of the Syrian era of the Antiochus’, and Babylonian); all of which overlap:
    • Babylon is part of Syria (during Antiochus IV’s rule who is a shadow and a type of the coming Antichrist).
    • Amalek was the grandson of Esau/Edom/Edomite. Agag was king of the Amalakites. Agag is the same translation as Gog whom the prophets foretold as the Antichrist; (Ezekiel 38:17)
    • Edom is Syrian. Edom and Mt. Seir are literally “Demonic/The Place of Demons” in Hebrew.
    • The harlot in Revelation has Babylon written on her forehead.
II Kings 16:So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-Pileser (A later name of Pul, II Kin. 15:19) king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son. Come up and save me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who rise up against me.”
  • EVEN THOUGH…God told him the designs of Rezin and Pekah to capture Jerusalem will not stand!
    Isaiah 7:7
    “It shall not stand,
Nor shall it come to pass.”
II Kings 16:And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), and in the treasuries of the king’s house, and sent it as a present to the king of Assyria.
II Kings 16:So the king of Assyria heeded him; for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus and took it, carried its people captive to Kir, and killed Rezin.
  • The defeat of Rezin and Pekah, son of Remaliah is promised to Ahaz in the Immanuel prophecy Isaiah 7:14, linked to the birth of a child who will be an infant.
    • Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
II Kings 16:10 Now King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that was at Damascus; and King Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the design of the altar and its pattern, according to all its workmanship.
  • Since Tiglath-Pileser “saved” Ahaz and Jerusalem, now Ahaz chooses to “worship” Tiglath-Pileser.
II Kings 16:11 Then Urijah the priest built an altar according to all that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus. So Urijah the priest made it before King Ahaz came back from Damascus.
II Kings 16:12 And when the king came back from Damascus, the king saw the altar; and the king approached the altar and made offerings on it.
II Kings 16:13 So he burned his burnt offering and his grain offering; and he poured his drink offering and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings on the altar.
II Kings 16:14 He also brought the bronze altar which was before the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), from the front of the temple (Lit. house)—from between the new altar and the house of the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ)—and put it on the north (H6828 ṣāp̄ôn gloomy, dark, hidden) side of the new altar.
II Kings 16:15 Then King Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, “On the great new altar burn the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, the king’s burnt sacrifice, and his grain offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, their grain offering, and their drink offerings; and sprinkle on it all the blood of the burnt offering and all the blood of the sacrifice. And the bronze altar shall be for me to inquire by.
II Kings 16:16 Thus did Urijah the priest, according to all that King Ahaz commanded.
II Kings 16:17 And King Ahaz cut off the panels of the carts, and removed the lavers from them; and he took down the Sea from the bronze oxen that were under it, and put it on a pavement of stones.
II Kings 16:18 Also he removed the Sabbath pavilion which they had built in the temple, and he removed the king’s outer entrance from the house of the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), on account of the king of Assyria.
II Kings 16:19 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaz which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
II Kings 16:20 So Ahaz rested with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David. Then Hezekiah his son (#12 in chart) reigned in his place.
