John 19

The Crucifixion in Other Gospels:
Matthew Chapter 27
Mark Chapter 15
Luke Chapter 23

John 19:28 After this, Jesus, knowing (seeing) that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
  • What was accomplished? Did the last sin of the last person who had ever lived or ever will live be satisfied? Did Jesus feel it and know it? Could He then declare “Done! Accomplished! Finished!”?
  • There would be no further sacrifices. No further a veil separating men from the presence of God. No further accusations made by Satan against those who accepted His blood. Satan’s power was broken, the chains against the saints (believers) were broken … all because Jesus’ heart was broken.
  • And yet…there is still a further Jewish agenda waiting in the future: Daniel’s 70th week, the Tribulation, when all Jews will come to know who their Savior is. There will be another “it is finished” from the book of Revelation:
    • Daniel 12:7 Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished.
    • Daniel 9:24 “Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, To finish the transgression, To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity, To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy.
  • Revelation 10:7 but in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets.

“It Is Finished – An Ocean of Meaning in a Drop of Language.”
~Charles Spurgeon

John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished! And bowing His head, He gave up His Spirit.

Jesus Dies on the Cross: A Personal Application

  • “It is finished!” on Jesus’ part. Now we are to take up His cross and follow Him. The gospel is not finished.
    • Mark 10:21 Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.
  • Reference verse:
    • Revelation 21:6 And He said to me, “It is done (finished)! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts”.

Greek Meaning of the Word “Finished”

The Greek word for “finished” is Strong’s teleō G5055, meaning to discharge (a debt). Strong‘s Blue Letter Bible comments, “Christ satisfied God’s justice by dying for all to pay for the sins of the elect. These sins can never be punished again since that would violate God’s justice. Sins can only be punished once, either by a substitute or by one’s own self.”

  • The above paragraph illustrates Moses’ sin of striking the Rock twice at Meribah when God stood before the Rock in Horeb. Jesus, as the second part of the Godhead, was struck not once, but twice by Moses. If God created heaven and earth with Quantum Physics, then Jesus was “super-positioned” or “entangled,” located both in heaven and on earth, such that Moses had literally struck Jesus twice.
  • Exodus 17:6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock (Jesus), and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
  • Numbers 20:10-11 And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?” Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.

A Proof of the Three Persons of the Trinity and Their Role in God’s Plan for Man is found in scripture concerning “The Fountain of Living Water”.

  • Jesus, as the second part of the Trinity: Remember what Jesus said about Himself, as well as the role of the Holy Spirit as the third part of the Trinity:
    • John 7:38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
    • John 4:10-11 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?
    • Jeremiah 2:13 “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me (Jesus), the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.
    • Jeremiah 17:13 O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake You shall be ashamed. “Those who depart from Me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord (Jesus), “The fountain of living waters.
    • John 7:37-39 On the last day, that great day of the feast (the 8th day of Tabernacles/Booths called Sukkot), Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit (the third person of the Godhead), whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
See: {4 of 5} John 7 – “The Feast of Tabernacles” to understand the deeper meaning for Jesus shouting out during the celebration of the parade of the Water Festival, celebrated on the 8th day of the Feast of Tabernacles.

IT IS FINISHED BECAUSE OF THE WATER OF LIFE (Jesus) AND THE SPIRIT.

  • Revelation 21:6 And He said to me, “It is done (finished)! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.
