Genesis 9

God’s Promise to Noah

Genesis 9:1 So God (‘ĕlōhîm) blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
Genesis 9:2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand.
Genesis 9:3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs.
  • Note: Prior to this, men ate only vegetables and fruits. God is giving man permission to eat animal meat.
Genesis 9:4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
Genesis 9:5 Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man.
Genesis 9:6 “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God (‘ĕlōhîm) He made man.
Genesis 9:7 And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; Bring forth abundantly in the earth And multiply in it.”
Genesis 9:8 Then God (‘ĕlōhîm) spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: 9 “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth.
  • The covenant is an oath. It’s not for man only but includes the animals.
Genesis 9:11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
Genesis 9:12 And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant (oath, a promise which cannot be broken, a covenant of death) which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
  • The sign is in the sky, a sky – which had never before been seen by any man because the earth was encapsulated in ice.
  • It was Paradise! Men lived in a terrarium as mist came up from the ground and watered the earth.
    • In the beginning God separated the waters above the earth, an orb of ice, from the waters below the earth, in the caverns in the earth’s crust. Genesis 1:7
      • Men were protected from the rays of the sun with a life span of hundreds of years; but they never saw the sun or the night sky twinkling with billions of stars. They had never felt rain pouring down from above and they had never seen a rainbow.
    • Science says it’s impossible to cover the earth with only 40 days and 40 nights of rain, but they don’t take into account what an asteroid can do when its fireball pummels downward piercing the surface of the earth spewing water upwards, breaking open the the fountains of the deep.
  • After the waters became quiet, Noah must have stared upwards through the small window in the ark, pondering the night sky; and now, he is going to see something he has never seen before: a Rainbow; a sign in the sky. What does this Rainbow mean?
    • Matthew 24:30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Genesis 9:13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.
  • A “bow” is an arch, literally, an archer, representing a covenant. Furthermore, “rain” is literally the faithful teacher, the Messiah. See: Jesus as the rain.
  • Jesus is the Rain in the clouds.
    • “Rain” is also translated “Teacher”. The “Faithful Rain” refers to the Messiah [H4175 – môrê]:
Genesis 9:14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow (Messiah’s Oath) shall be seen in the cloud;
  • Jesus’ return to earth is a time of judgment and fire. He will come in the clouds with His saints and angels.
  • James 1:14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints (a cloud of saints), 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

  • As I work on this chapter, I see this picture in the Washington Post. I think to myself it is a metaphorical representation of Armageddon, The Rainbow (Jesus) vs The Tornado (Antichrist indwelt by Satan) at the end of the tribulation.
Genesis 9:15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
Genesis 9:16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God (‘ĕlōhîm) and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”
  • Jesus is in the cloud of saints and angels, and when the Father looks on Him He remembers the covenant.
Genesis 9:17 And God (‘ĕlōhîm) said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
  • The Antichrist breaks his covenant (the peace treaty) “in half”. He turns against the Jews, the people of his covenant.
  • Jesus broke bread. The Antichrist breaks the peace treaty.

Signs of the Covenants

Noah and His Sons

Genesis 9:18 Now the sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And Ham was the father of Canaan.
  • The sons of Canaan became the Canaanites. This was the land God will give to the Hebrews.
Genesis 9:19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was populated.
  • Japheth, the father of the nations of Europe which spread from Turkey and Russia.
  • Ham, the father of the Africans, Babylon, the Canaanites and those who descended from the giants.
  • Shem, the father of the Arabs and the Jews.
Genesis 9:20 And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard.
  • A personal experience happened to me as I was studying the story of Noah. I could label it as Ripley’s believe it or not: I had to urge to do a search for “city of eight” and sure enough, the following appeared (I was ecstatic):
  • There is a village on Mount Ararat called “Arzep” meaning The Place of Eight. Around the village are huge anchor stones for a large ancient boat and deteriorating remains of that boat with dimensions matching Noah’s ark.
  • Dr. Friedrich Parrot ascended mount Ararat in 1829, over 500 years after Marco Polo recorded his sighting of the mountain. While Dr. Parrot did not attempt to dig up the ark, he did, however, document how the locals felt about the legend of Noah’s ark.
“All the Armenians are firmly persuaded that Noah’s Ark remains to this very day on the top of Ararat, and that, in order to preserve it, no human being is allowed to approach it,” he said.
  • In April 2010, Man-Fai Yuen, a NAMI researcher, said that he and the search team had actually entered a wooden structure high on Ararat, and went on to describe the different spaces in the structure. The researcher also claims that carbon dating puts the wood at ~4,800 years old. This would put the flood at ~2,790 BC.
  • The BC Timeline puts the date of the flood at 2344 BC according to Biblical genealogies.
Genesis 9:21 Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent.
Genesis 9:22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.
  • Ham did not cover the nakedness of his father. He had to go and tell his brothers.
Genesis 9:23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.
  • Shem and Japheth were ashamed for their father. They covered his nakedness. They worked as a team to accomplish their goal.
  • Being naked is akin to shame and sin. Adam and Eve discovered they were naked after they sinned and tried to cover their own sins but could not. God had to kill an animal and use its skin to cover them (with the animal’s blood)
  • The pattern is first related to gossip, controlling the tongue and covering the nakedness (sin) of others.
  • Secondly, it is after the pattern of nakedness in the Garden of Eden. Noah sinned, whether intentionally or unintentionally. He may not have known the grape juice in this new land would cause him to become drunk. Regardless, he was drunk and naked in his sin.
  • Shem and Japheth covered his sin but Ham reveled in it.
  • The Moral of the Story: Am I a Shem, a Japheth, or a Ham? If you are a Ham you are exposing the shame of others with gossip, not being able to control your tongue (Read James chapter 3)
Genesis 9:24 So Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him.
  • How did Noah know? Did he have a vague memory?
  • If Ham had marked him, how would he know it was Ham?
Genesis 9:25 Then he (Noah) said:
  • “Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants he shall be to his brethren.”
  • Moral alert: Sadly, the children are the ones who pay. What is my parenting doing to my children?
Genesis 9:26 And he said:
“Blessed be the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ), The God (‘ĕlōhîm) of Shem, And may Canaan be his servant.
Genesis 9:27 May God (‘ĕlōhîm) enlarge Japheth (typically the gentiles),
And may he dwell in the tents (under the canopy) of Shem;
And may Canaan be his servant.”
  • @ Prophecy Fulfillment Alert: Luke 3:36 (The God of Shem Gen 9:26 will also be the Son of Shem Luke 3:36) (Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus)
  • The Jews are descendants of Shem, from whom the line of Jesus the Messiah comes. The Gentiles, as the bride of Christ, live under the canopy of God’s blessings to the Jews.
Genesis 9:28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty (350) years. 29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty (950) years; and he died.
  • Noah lived to be 950 years old, 50 years short of 1,000. Noah was born to Lamech and lived from 2944 BC to 1994 BC. (Noah was 298 years old when the “Step” pyramid of Djoser (Zoser) was built at Saqqara, Egypt.) Noah was the one who witnessed “There were giants on the earth in those days and also afterward, when the sons of God came into the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were old, men of renown. Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” [Gen 6:2-5]
  • The story of Noah will be retold in the coming chapter with more detail. The pattern, throughout scripture, is that the story is first written, then it begins again to be retold with more information; Like the story of Adam and Eve. The writer backs up and starts again with more information.)
