Glory and Universality of the Messiah’s Reign

A Psalm of Solomon.

Psalm 72:¹ Give the King Your judgments, O God (‘ĕlōhîm),
And Your righteousness to the king’s Son (Jesus the Messiah).

• This speaks to 1) Solomon, and 2) Jesus the Messiah

• Not only is Jesus king David’s son as his descendant, but He is also king David’s ancestor.

Psalm 72:² He will judge Your people with righteousness,
And Your poor with justice.

Psalm 72:³ The mountains will bring peace to the people,
And the little hills, by righteousness.

Psalm 72:⁴ He will bring justice to the poor of the people;
He will save the children of the needy,
And will break in pieces (crush) the oppressor.

Psalm 72:⁵ They shall fear You (They shall continue)
As long as the sun and moon endure,
Throughout all generations.

Psalm 72:⁶ He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing,
Like showers that water the earth.

• See Jesus as the Rain
• Rain is also translated as “Teacher”.
• The faithful Rain is the Messiah, Jesus.

    Be glad then, you children of Zion, And rejoice in the Lord your God; For He has given you the former Rain faithfully, And He will cause the Rain to come down for you— The former Rain, And the latter Rain in the first.

Psalm 72:⁷ In His days the righteous shall flourish,
And abundance of peace,
Until the moon is no more.

Until there is a new heaven and a new earth, when the moon is no more.

  Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.

Psalm 72:⁸ He shall have dominion also from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.

Psalm 72:⁹ Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him,
And His enemies will lick the dust.

• His enemies will lick the dust like the serpent in Genesis.

Psalm 72:¹⁰ The kings of Tarshish and of the isles
Will bring presents;
The kings of Sheba and Seba
Will offer gifts.

Psalm 72:¹¹ Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him;
All nations shall serve Him.

  Ask of Me, and I will give You
  The nations for Your inheritance,
  And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
  Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

  She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne.
• Revelation 19:15
  Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the wine press of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Psalm 72:¹² For He will deliver the needy when he cries,
The poor also, and him who has no helper.

Psalm 72:¹³ He will spare the poor and needy,
And will save the souls of the needy.

Psalm 72:¹⁴ He will redeem their life from oppression and violence;
And precious shall be their blood in His sight.

Psalm 72:¹⁵ And He shall live;
And the gold of Sheba will be given to Him;
Prayer also will be made for Him continually,
And daily He shall be praised.

Psalm 72:¹⁶ There will be an abundance of grain in the earth,
On the top of the mountains;
Its fruit shall wave like Lebanon;
And those of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

• Note: The sower will overtake the reaper.

• Amos 9:13 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains shall drip with sweet wine, And all the hills shall flow with it.

Psalm 72:¹⁷ His name shall endure forever;
His name shall continue as long as the sun.

  For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations,” Says the Lord of hosts.

And men shall be blessed in Him;
All nations shall call Him blessed.

  I will also gather all nations, And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; And I will enter into judgment with them there On account of My people, My heritage Israel, Whom they have scattered among the nations; They have also divided up My land.

Psalm 72:¹⁸ Blessed be the Lord God (Yᵊhōvâ ‘ĕlōhîm), the God (‘ĕlōhîm) of Israel,
Who only does wondrous things!

Psalm 72:¹⁹ And blessed be His glorious name forever!
And let the whole earth be filled with His glory.
