Psalm 2

The chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Jesus as He was teaching in the temple, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?” (Matthew 21:23)

Psalm 2 could have answered this question for them but the chief “priests” were ignorant of scripture.

What should I learn from this chapter?

  • God’s Timeline for the Jews
  • What a “rod of iron” means
  • The Authority of Jesus

  • Literal meaning of Kiss
  • Meaning of “Begotten”
  • Jesus’ crucifixion week

Psalm 2 describes the outline of the prophetic events beginning with Jesus’ Crucifixion Week and proceeding to the Millennium when Jesus sets up His 1,000 year reign on earth.

Below is a chart of Jesus’ Crucifixion Week so that the reader can follow the events: Note: the following chart has been accomplished with great research over a period of several years. It is the one and only timeline which fulfills all the requirements of scripture.
See Topic: Jesus’ Crucifixion Week for the literal week, the symbolic week, the types and shadows, and its veracity. When the pop-up appears click on the link at the top of the pop-up.

Psalm’s 2 begins with the crucifixion of Jesus at Passover.

Note: these days of the week fit 31 AD.

Psalm 2:1 Why do the nations (Gentiles: Rome) rage (throng tumultuously),
And the people (the Jews) plot a vain (hopeless and empty) thing? (By trying to kill and keep the Son of God dead and in the grave).

Psalm 2:The kings of the earth (Gentiles: Rome) set themselves,
And the (Jewish) rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) and against His Anointed, (the Christ, Commissioned One, Heb. Messiah) saying,
  • Matthew 26:3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 and plotted to take Jesus by trickery (deception, intrigue) and kill Him.
  • Prophecy Fulfillment Alert: John 1:41; Acts 2:36 (To own the title, Anointed: Christ) (Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus)
Psalm 2:“Let us break Their bonds ( the bonds of the Godhead) in pieces
And cast away their cords (yoke of authority) from us.”
  • Satan’s goal was to break the bonds of the Godhead apart when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness to be disobedient to the Father. Ref: Mark 1:13 and Matt 4:1
  • The Jewish leaders tried to break the bonds of the Godhead by pressuring Jesus to deny His position in the Godhead.
    • Matthew 26:64-65 Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!
  • Prophecy Fulfillment Alert: Acts 4:25-28 (The enmity of kings foreordained) (Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus)
  • There is a bond which holds the electrons of an atom together. The logo or icon for nuclear emission is three electrons circling the core. What happens if those bonds are broken?
Psalm 2:He who sits in the heavens shall laugh (in contempt);
  • At the ridiculous, impossible attempt to keep the Messiah, God’s only begotten Son in the grave.
Psalm 2: (Therefore) The Lord (‘ăḏōnāy) shall hold them in derision (chaos and utter confusion).
  • Jesus was raised from the dead by the Godhead:
    • Jesus raised Himself from the dead:
      • (John 2:19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”)
      • John 10:18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
    • The Father raised Jesus from the dead:
      • (Romans 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
    • The Spirit raised Jesus from the dead
      • Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
    • These bonds cannot be broken.

Psalm 2:Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure:
  • His wrath includes the destruction of the temple to being scattered among the nations and all the way through the seven year tribulation;
  • 70 AD Vaspasian and his son Titus destroy the Jewish temple taking the Jews into captivity (approx 30 years after Jesus’ crucifixion).
    • After all, the Jewish leaders declared at Jesus’ execution “We have no king but Caesar”.
    • Huge parades are had in Rome displaying Jewish leaders, plunder, reenactments, and chained captives, some of which were sacrificed at the temple of Jupiter. Some of the “floats” were as tall as two stories. The year Vaspasian died his son Titus becomes Caesar in 79 AD, the same year Mt. Vesuvius erupted in Pompeii in Italy.

  • The Jews are not only “scattered” but they are persecuted, evicted, and “holocausted” for ~2,000 years, before becoming a nation which will be met by seven years of severe tribulation, worse than any other time in history.
  • Psalm 2:5 includes the Lord’s “Day of Wrath’ the seven year tribulation when the Jews will go through a time of trouble like no other. It is called a time of sorrows like a woman in labor and also called Jacob’s troubles (a 7 year famine).
  • Matthew 24:9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Psalm 2:6 now jumps to the end of the tribulation at Jesus’ return to earth. God is fulfilling His purpose.

Psalm 2:“Yet I (God) have set (Literally: poured out) My King (Jesus)
On My holy hill of Zion (Lit. Upon Zion, the hill of My holiness, Jerusalem).”
  • This verse will be fulfilled at Jesus’ return to earth and when He sets up His kingdom to rule from Jerusalem for 1,000 years called the Millennium.
    • At Jesus’ first advent on earth, His soul was poured out in anguish.
      • Psalm 22:14 I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me.
      • Isaiah 53:12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
    • When Jesus returns for His second advent, His soul will once again be poured out but with a difference, the next time it will be with authority.
  • During this time Jesus will reign in Jerusalem.
  • When Jesus prayed “Thy Kingdom Come” he was praying for the millennium to come. Ref Matthew 6:10
  • Revelation 20:4 [The Saints Reign with Christ 1,000 Years] And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
  • Prophecy Fulfillment Alert: Matt 2:2 (To own the title King) (Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus)
  • The millennium is a time of peace and prosperity. For more information on the Millennium see: The Millennium ~ Barbara Grover
Psalm 2:“I will declare (or count) the decree (or prescribed limit, boundary):
  • Daniel’s 70 weeks of prophecy: The count from the building of the wall for the second temple to Messiah the Prince is 69 weeks (the prescribed limit). After that…the coming of Daniel’s 70th week, the seven year tribulation. See verse 5.
The Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) has said to Me (‘ēl),
‘You (Jesus Yeshua, the Messiah), are My Son (bēn – heir),
Today I have begotten You (raised from the dead).
  • “Begotten” means to bring forth/reveal and refers to Jesus’ birth as a man, Jesus’ resurrection as the Son of God, and Jesus’ return as the King of Kings.
    • The Birth:
      • John 1:14 [The Word Becomes Flesh] And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
    • The Resurrection:
      • Acts 13:33 God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that HE HAS RAISED UP JESUS. As it is also written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.’
    • The Return (Judgment):
      • John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
      • John 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The Millennium.

Psalm 2:Ask of Me (the Father), and I will give You (Jesus) the (gentile) nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.
  • This is the same offer Satan gave Jesus if He (Jesus) would fall down and worship him (Satan).
    • Matthew 4:9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

See verses below concerning His return when He brings the saints and the angels with Him at the end of the tribulation to set up his kingdom during the millennium:

  • Revelation 7:9 [A Multitude from the Great Tribulation] After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands,
  • Revelation 15:4 Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, For Your judgments have been manifested.”
  • Jude 1:14-15 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
  • See chart below – Timeline: End of the seven year tribulation aka affliction and the beginning of Jesus’ 1,000 year reign, called “The Millennium”
Psalm 2:9 [Jesus’ return to earth] You (the Messiah Jesus) shall break (also scatter) them with a rod (scepter) of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”
  • Revelation 2:27 ‘He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’ (like Judas)
  • “Potter’s vessels” are people made from the dust of the earth, like Adam. Edom is a version of the name Adam. He was “Red” like the red clay used for pottery. There is a faint allusion to miry clay referring to the descendants of Edom.
  • Isaiah 33:14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites: “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”
  • When Darkness meets Light, there is no compromise; there are no 50 shades of grey. A rod of iron is a scepter of absolute rule with pure justice.
    • Ted Kennedy once said Christians were the modern day Taliban.
If so, Ted would find himself miserable during the reign of Jesus on earth. But then, there would be no women for him to leave to drown in the Chappaqua river.
      • Kennedy left a party on Chappaquiddick at 11:15 p.m. Friday, with Kopechne. He maintained that his intent was to immediately take Kopechne to a ferry landing and return to Edgartown, but that he accidentally made a wrong turn onto a dirt road leading to a one-lane bridge. After his car skidded off the bridge into Poucha Pond, Kennedy swam free, and maintained that he tried to rescue Kopechne from the submerged car, but that he could not. Kopechne’s death could have happened any time between about 11:30 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday, as an off-duty deputy sheriff stated he saw a car matching Kennedy’s at 00:40 a.m. Kennedy left the scene, and did not report the crash to police until after 10 a.m. Saturday. Meanwhile, a diver recovered Kopechne’s body from Kennedy’s car shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday. At a July 25, 1969, court hearing, Kennedy pled guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident, and received a two-month suspended jail sentence.A January 5, 1970, judicial inquest concluded that Kennedy and Kopechne did not intend to take the ferry, and that Kennedy intentionally turned toward the bridge, operating his vehicle negligently, if not recklessly, at too high a speed for the hazard which the bridge posed in the dark. The judge stopped short of recommending charges, and a grand jury convened on April 6, 1970, returning no indictments. On May 27, 1970, a Registry of Motor Vehicles hearing resulted in Kennedy’s driver’s license being suspended for a total of sixteen months after the crash.
      • A Rod of Iron forces people to follow righteousness and justice.
  • At Jesus’ second advent to earth he comes with His saints and angels. His foot touches Mt. Olives and it splits in half. He and His army fight the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and Satan with the Sword of God (the Word of God). The Antichrist and his armies are chased down and captured. They are handed over to a Jewish tribunal for trial and execution. God throws the souls of the Antichrist and the False Prophet into the Lake of Fire. Satan, however, is bound for 1,000 years during the millennium (1,000 year rule). Any rebellion comes from the sinful hearts of men, not from Satan’s influence.
    Verses below:
    • He comes with His saints and angels, Jude 1:14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
    • Zechariah 14:1, 3-4 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming … Then the Lord will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle. 4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,
  • He and His army fight the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and Satan with the Sword of God.
  • Revelation 19:15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
    • Zechariah 14:12 And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths. (Nuclear War?)
  • The Antichrist and his armies are chased down and captured.
    • Zechariah 14:5 Then you shall flee through My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal. Yes, you shall flee As you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Thus the Lord my God will come, And all the saints with You (Him).
  • They are handed over to a Jewish tribunal for trial and execution
    • Psalm 74:14 You broke the heads (nations) of Leviathan (Satan indwelling the Antichrist) in pieces, And gave him as food (devour) to the people inhabiting the wilderness (the remnant hidden in the wilderness).
  • The souls of the Antichrist and the False Prophet are thrown into the Lake of Fire
    • Revelation 19:20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
  • Satan is bound up for 1.000 years during the millennium

Psalm 2:10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
  • An admonition to all kings to understand God’s agenda and follow it; the Day of Judgment is coming.
  • Note: The learned rulers of the Jews during Jesus day knew this scripture, written ~1,000 BC during King David’s reign, and yet ignored God’s warnings.
  • The kings during the 1,000 year reign must take even greater heed. Jesus will be the ruler of the earth, no longer the lamb to be slain.
Psalm 2:11 Serve [the Alpha and Omega] the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
  • “Serve” means to be led or enticed to serve.
  • A hidden treasure: “Serve” is followed by two hidden and untranslated Hebrew letters: Alef and Tav (in Greek it would be Alpha and Omega). Forgotten and invisible until someone finds them when studying Psalm chapter 2.
    • h853 אֶת־  אֵת ‘ēṯ
If included in the translation it would read: “Serve the Alpha and Omega, the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
    • ēṯ It’s root meaning is H226 ‘ôṯ sign, signal, token, ensign, standard, miracle, proof

Psalm 2:12 Kiss (Literally: to equip with armed men) the Son (“bar” meaning “heir”), lest He (the Lord Jesus) be angry, and you perish in the way (in the course of your actions), when His wrath is kindled but a little.
  • Judas made the wrong decision with the wrong kind of a “kiss”, the kiss of betrayal bringing the armed men of the high priest.
    • Luke 22:47 [Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane] And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.
      * Judas chose the wrong side.
    • Luke 22:48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
    • Mark 14:21 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.
  • To kiss is to support, have someone’s back, make a choice of whose side you are on. When Jesus returns to earth people know whose side they’ve been on during the battle of Armageddon.
    h5401 נַשְּׁקוּ־  נָשַׁק nāšaq
  • His wrath (literally, a flaring nose like a snorting bull). Even a “little wrath” can cause a king to perish.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
  • @Prophecy Fulfillment Alert: John 20:31 (Life comes through faith in Him) (Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus)
  • Trust is faith. God doesn’t explain Himself. Not everything make sense to men. But man’s Creator assures them it will most certainly be worth it to trust him. He has earned that trust and He works on man’s behalf. There is a promotion and an inheritance waiting for those who do.

►Psalm 2:12 Gives an Invitation to Abundant Life and a Warning to the Rebellious

  • Isaiah chapter 55: 1
    “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;
And you who have no money, come, buy and eat.
Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend money (weigh out silver like Judas) for what is not bread (life), And your wages for what does not satisfy (does not bring honor and dignity)?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
3 Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you—The sure mercies of David.
4 Indeed I have given him (King David is compared to Jesus) a witness to the people, a leader and commander for the people.
5 Surely you shall call a nation you do not know, And nations (gentiles) who do not know you shall run to you, Because of the Lord your God, And the Holy One of Israel; For He has glorified you (Israel).”
6 Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near (before it is too late).
    7 Let the wicked (man of iniquity) forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
    Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him;
And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.
  • John 3:16 “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”
  • Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ,

Note: The faithful will be coheirs in reign, life, rule, and power. Jesus is sharing everything He created and everything He earned to give it away free to those who love Him.

  • Romans 11:25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness (end) of the Gentiles (age of grace) has come in.
    • Then the Jewish branch is once again graphed in and God’s focus is on the Jews during the seven year tribulation begins: Daniel’s 70th week.
