Psalm 2

The chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Jesus as He was teaching in the temple, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?” (Matthew 21:23)

Psalm 2 could have answered this question for them, but the chief “priests” seemed to be ignorant of scripture.

What should I learn from this chapter?

  • God’s Timeline for the Jews
  • The Authority of Jesus
  • Jesus’ crucifixion week
  • Daniel’s 69th “week”
  • Psalm 2 describes the outline of the prophetic events beginning with Jesus’ Crucifixion Week and proceeding to the Millennium when Jesus sets up His 1,000 year reign on earth.
  • Below is a chart of Jesus’ Crucifixion Week so that the reader can follow the events: Note: the following chart has been accomplished with great research over a period of several years. It is the one and only timeline which fulfills all the requirements of scripture.
See Topic: Jesus’ Crucifixion Week for the literal week, the symbolic week, the types and shadows, and its veracity. When the pop-up appears click on the link at the top of the pop-up.

Psalm 2 begins with the crucifixion of Jesus at Passover. The darkened lines are the evening and the white lines are daylight.

A Roman day is: Daylight, then Evening
A Jewish day is: Evening, then Daylight

Note: These days of the week only fit 31 AD : http://www.cgsf.org/dbeattie/calendar

THE CRUCIFIXION

Psalm 2:1 Why do the nations (Gentiles: Rome) rage (throng tumultuously),
And the people (the Jews) plot a vain (hopeless and empty) thing? (By trying to kill and keep the Son of God dead and in the grave).
  • The Jewish leaders were going to kill Lazarus because Jesus raised him from the dead; also an empty and vain thing. You can’t keep a (risen) dead man down.
  • What did they think would happen if they killed him? Wouldn’t it be like “Weebles wobble but they don’t stay down”? They are “hit” but they pop right up again.
Psalm 2:The kings of the earth (Gentiles: Rome) set themselves,
And the (Jewish) rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) and against His Anointed, (the Christ, Commissioned One, Heb. Messiah) saying,
  • Matthew 26:3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 and plotted to take Jesus by trickery (deception, intrigue) and kill Him.
  • Prophecy Fulfillment Alert: John 1:41; Acts 2:36 (To own the title, Anointed: Christ) (Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus)
Psalm 2:“Let us break Their bonds (the bonds of the Godhead) in pieces
And cast away their cords (yoke of authority) from us.”
  • Satan’s goal was to break the bonds of the Godhead apart when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness to be disobedient to the Father. Ref: Mark 1:13 and Matt 4:1
  • The Jewish leaders tried to break the bonds of the Godhead by pressuring Jesus to deny His position in the Godhead.
    • Matthew 26:64-65 Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!
  • PROOF OF GOD’S WORD: Prophecy Fulfillment Alert: Acts 4:25-28 (The enmity of kings foreordained) (Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus)
  • There is a bond which holds the electrons of an atom together. The logo or icon for nuclear emission is three electrons circling the core. What happens if those bonds are broken?
Psalm 2:He who sits in the heavens shall laugh (in contempt);
  • At the ridiculous, impossible attempt to keep the Messiah, God’s only begotten Son in the grave.
Psalm 2: (Therefore) The Lord (‘ăḏōnāy) shall hold them in derision (chaos and utter confusion).
  • Who raised Jesus from the dead? Jesus was raised from the dead by all of the Godhead:

    • Jesus raised Himself from the dead:

      • (John 2:19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”)John 10:18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”

    • The Father raised Jesus from the dead:

      • (Romans 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
    • The Spirit raised Jesus from the dead
      • Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
    • These bonds cannot be broken.

THE SEVEN YEARS OF JEWISH PERSECUTION: DANIEL’S 70th WEEK

Psalm 2:Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure.
  • The Seven Year Tribulation will be worse than any other time in Jewish History and the entire world will be pulled into the earth’s destruction like a black hole.
    • Matthew 24:21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
    • Matthew 24:27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 For wherever the carcass (Jerusalem) is, there the eagles (vulture predators) will be gathered together.

JESUS’ RETURN TO EARTH

Psalm 2:“Yet I (God) have set My King (Jesus)
On My holy hill of Zion (Lit. Upon Zion, the hill of My holiness, Jerusalem).”
  • Jesus’ return will come at the end of the seven year tribulation.
  • Jude 1:14-15 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
  • This verse will be fulfilled at Jesus’ return to earth when He sets up His kingdom to rule from Jerusalem for 1,000 years called the Millennium.

THE PRONOUNCEMENT FOR THE TIMING AND AUTHORITY OF GOD’S SON

Psalm 2:“I will declare (or count) the decree (or prescribed limit, boundary):
  • Daniel’s 70 weeks of prophecy: The count which begins in the rebuilding of the wall by Nehemiah in the book of Esther until Messiah the Prince is cut off – 69 weeks (the prescribed limit) before the 7 year tribulation.
    • The command to build the wall begins Sat 03/31/0446 BC of the Roman Calendar or Nisan 7, 3316 on the Jewish Calendar, and ends 4/25/31 AD of the Roman Calendar or Nissan 14, 3792.
    • Numbers 18:34 For each day of disobedience you get one year of judgement.
      69 weeks times 7 days/week are 483 Days=or 483 Years of judgment.
    • 483 years times 360 days per year = 173,880 days: See below
    • The prophesied seventh week yet to come will add the following: = 1 week x 7 days = 7 days or 7 Years of judgment. 7 years times 360 days per year = 2,520 days.
      Each half of the tribulation = 1,260 days Revelation 11:3, Revelation 12:6, or 42 months (1,260 days/30 days a month) Revelation 11:2, Revelation 13:5 or time , times & half a time which is 3-1/2 yrs, Daniel 7:25, Daniel 12:7, Revelation 12:14.
    • Daniel’s 70 weeks total 176,400 days (173,880 plus 2,520 days)
    • (See Daniel 9:20 for The SeventyWeeks Prophecy)
The Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) has said to Me (‘ēl),
‘You (Jesus Yeshua, the Messiah), are My Son,
Today I have begotten You. (Revealed you to the World)

THE MILLENNIUM, A 1,000 YEAR REIGN OF JESUS ON EARTH OVER ALL NATIONS

Psalm 2:Ask of Me (the Father), and I will give You (Jesus) the (gentile) nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.
  • Jesus will reign in Jerusalem.
The millennium is a time of peace and prosperity.
  • When Jesus prayed “Thy Kingdom Come” he was praying for the millennium to come. Ref Matthew 6:10.
  • Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
  • Having the nations to rule is the same offer Satan gave Jesus if He (Jesus) would fall down and worship him (Satan).
    • Matthew 4:9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
  • Revelation 7:9 [A Multitude from the Great Tribulation] After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands,
  • Revelation 15:4 Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, For Your judgments have been manifested.”
  • See chart below – Timeline: End of the seven year tribulation/affliction and the beginning of Jesus’ 1,000 year reign.

The Church Age is called Gentile Only with Jewish Exceptions due to Romans 11:25: For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness (end) of the Gentiles (age of grace) has come in. The age of grace ends with the rapture when Daniel’s 70th week begins.

JESUS’ RETURN TO EARTH REVIEW AND COMMENTS ON ARMAGEDDON

Psalm 2:9 You (the Messiah Jesus) shall break (also scatter) them (the sinners in Zion) with a rod (scepter) of iron (unyielding); You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”
  • Revelation 2:27 ‘He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’.
  • “Potter’s vessels” are a symbolism for men, made from the dust/clay of the earth, like Adam.
Edom is a version of the name Adam. He was “Red” like the red clay used for pottery. There is a faint allusion to miry clay referring to the descendants of Edom.
Zechariah 12:9 – It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
Obadiah 1:18 – And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau. (Not one descendant of Esau)
Malachi 1:2, Romans 9:13 – Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.
  • Isaiah 33:14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites: “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”
  • At Jesus’ second advent to earth he comes with His saints and angels. His foot touches Mt. Olives and it splits in half. He and His army fight the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and Satan with the Sword of God (the Word of God). Armageddon. The Antichrist and his armies are chased down and captured. God throws the souls of the Antichrist and the False Prophet into the Lake of Fire. Satan, however, is bound for 1,000 years during the millennium (Jesus’ 1,000 year rule). During the millennium, the source of any rebellion comes from the sinful hearts of men and not from Satan’s influence.
    Verses below:
    • He comes with His saints and angels, Jude 1:14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
    • Zechariah 14:1, 3-4 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming … Then the Lord will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle. 4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,
  • Jesus and His army fight the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and Satan; the unholy trinity.
    • Revelation 19:15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
    • Zechariah 14:12 And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths. (Nuclear War)
  • The Antichrist and his armies are chased down and captured.
    • Zechariah 14:5 Then you shall flee through My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal. Yes, you shall flee As you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Thus the Lord my God will come, And all the saints with You (Him).
    • Psalm 74:14 You broke the heads (nations) of Leviathan (Satan indwelling the Antichrist) in pieces, And gave him as food (devour) to the people inhabiting the wilderness (the remnant hidden in the wilderness).
  • The Antichrist and the False Prophet are thrown into the Lake of Fire
    • Revelation 19:20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Psalm 2:10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
  • An admonition to all kings, leaders, and men of powerful to understand God’s agenda and follow it; the Day of Judgment is coming.
  • The learned rulers of the Jews during Jesus day knew this scripture, written ~1,000 BC during King David’s reign, and yet ignored God’s warnings.
  • The kings during the 1,000 year reign must take even greater heed. Jesus will be the ruler of the earth, no longer the lamb to be slain.

THE ADMONITION:

Psalm 2:11 Serve [the Alpha and Omega] the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
  • “Serve” means to be led or enticed to serve. The greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven is the servant of all. Matthew 23:11 But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.
  • Have you been intimidated by someone? Power is intimidating. Consider the power of your Creator.
    • Hebrews 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Psalm 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest He (the Lord Jesus) be angry, and you perish in the way (in the course of your actions), when His wrath is kindled but a little.
  • Psalm 2:12 Gives an Invitation to Abundant Life and a Warning to the Rebellious
Blessed are all those who put their trust (faith) in Him.
  • @Prophecy Fulfillment Alert: John 20:31 (Life comes through faith in Him) (Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus)
  • Trust is faith. God doesn’t explain Himself. Not everything make sense to men. But man’s Creator assures them it will most certainly be worth it to trust him. He has earned that trust and He works on man’s behalf. There is a promotion and an inheritance waiting for those who do.
    • Isaiah 55:8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
